Won't restart or shut down

I've had my windows 8 computer since December and for the past month or so it will not restart or shut down unless I do a hard shut down with the power button. When hitting restart it starts to shut down, then comes up with "restarting" screen and just stays there, never moves from there. On shut down it just freezes after closing down windows. Any idea how I can remedy this? It can't be good always shutting down via the power button. I haven't added any new programs at all so not sure why this started happening.

Start Task Manager. Click on the Processes tab.
Start shutdown and watch the Task Manager window.
See what processes don't go away.

After a bit, start closing them one at a time until shutdown completes on it's own. That will tell you what is hanging up the process.

Just tried that, no such luck, when it shuts down it closes out the task manager window then the screen goes black (into shutdown), to look at the monitor you would think it was shut down but the computer is still running.

Press...

:winkey:+X then A

Type:
SHUTDOWN -R -F -T 5
Press enter.

-F will force everything closed. After reboot, try restarting normally. If problem persists, there's a program misbehaving most likely.

Messing with it that long = think I'd read up & do a recimg -CreateImage d:\RefreshImage to save my programs & run the Refresh install.

John, I followed your instructions, it restarted perfectly. I restarted again just to see and again it restarted. So, for now I'm hoping that did the trick. Also, Ztrucker, hibernate is off. I haven't turned off fast startup yet but will if the problem persists.
When I was checking on the power options, under shutdown settings (where you can turn off fast startup) I noticed "Lock" is checkmarked, is that correct?
