I always start with simple things to do that might work: system restore especially if you know about when your problem began, sfc /scannow (may need to run multiple times--say 3), automatic repair (may need to run multiple times--say 3).

Do you have any 3rd party software installed that includes a context menu extension?

  1. This program does not require installation, just right click and run as Administrator
  2. From the menu, click on Options then click on Filter by Extension Type and select Context Menu
  3. On the list, you'll see some of the entries with pink background, those are installed by the third party software
  4. Hold down CTRL Key and select all of them then click on the red button on top left corner to disable.
  5. Click on the Options again and select Restart Explorer
  6. Now try to right click on desktop to see if it fix your problem. If it does then start to enable one by one and repeat step 5 until the problem occurs again, that's the offending extension.

Please post back the result.

Thanks for the help topgundcp! I followed your instructions and found that the culprit is AppShellPage Class being run by Atheros Bluetooth Module 8.0.0.204, located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Bluetooth Suite\BtvAppExt.dll. I've just uninstalled the entire Atheros Bluetooth Suite since I don't use it.

Nice job topguncp!

I was just going to suggest the op download "Auto-Runs" from system internals but you beat me to the punch with your excellent solution. Just for reference, here is a screenshot of Auto-Runs at work. However, since I never used ShellExView, I cannot comment on the differences so maybe you could comment on my screenshot as compared to the capabilities of ShellExView. Thanks. (the red arrows and red disabled comments are mine)

I just noticed that your name is Ravi11 so it got me to wondering if you were, in fact, also the author of the great "TakeStock" software. Any connection?

Yes, I am using Autoruns all the time and actually I recommend people to use it for other problems. With Autoruns, you can do a lot of other things such as drivers problem, Internet for malware add-ons etc... and of course you can use it to resolve the problem above. However, for this particular problem, ShellExView allows us to use the filter for right click context menu only while Autoruns list all the extensions and a little crowded, we have to go thru the list and select which one to disable.

Cheers

I have a similar problem. Recent upgrade to Windows 8, elected clean install. My file explorer freezes when I right click on a video or audio file. I selective uninstalled software to find the culprit, and it turned out to be the native Video and Music players with Windows 8. Having either installed causes File Explorer to freeze.

These programs have no problem playing the audio or video files, but when I right click from the desktop to get a menu, it freezes and I need to use the Task Manager to restart File Explorer. They also play fine with Windows Media Player and Windows Media Center (and other programs, such as VLC), so it would seem odd if it was a codec problem (and I'm not sure why that would impact File Explorer anyway).

I used ShellExView as described, and the only third party result was Nvidia, and disabling it did not help. The only thing that works is uninstalling the Video and Audio apps from the Store.

ShellExView did not show different results whether these native Win8 apps were installed or uninstalled. I took screenshots to compare them side by side with the players both installed and uninstalled, and the results were identical.

It's not a big deal (I'm not a fan of those apps anyway; I found other apps in the store that will work in their place and don't cause the same problem), but it seems kind of odd. Wanted to make sure I'm not missing anything.

Any thoughts/ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have been looking for days for a solution. That one is just perfect and solved my right click problem, finally ! Thanks to topgun. Unfortunately, that is my Kasperky context menu which is slowing down my first right click. I liked my kaspersky right click :(. I will try to reinstall it maybe.

I have this problem in Windows 8 on my laptop that I bought this morning. I tried the above solution, but disabling the third party entries didn't fix it. I've also seen people talk about Nvidia and Bluetooth software causing this problem, but as far as I can tell, I don't have either program/driver on my PC. Do you guys have any advice? Would switching to 8.1 fix the problem? This is extremely frustrating!

Please fill out your system specs as much as you can so we know what type of laptop you have, Make & Model, RAM etc...
Since you just bought the Laptop this morning, there must be a lot of bloatware, adware, trial software being installed by the manufacturer so the first thing I would recommend is to uninstall those to get your Laptop cleaned up a little bit then we can go from there.

In addition to Shell Extensions, There are also services, Processes running in the background that can cause the system to slow down and abnormal behavior.

Update to Windows 8.1 is not advisable at this point until you get your system running as it should and in addition, you'll need to make a system image backup since you cannot back out once you update it to Windows 8.1

Hope this helps.

I did as you recommended stopping all third party installed entries, but the problem persist. I have a folder with movies in MP4, the first right click on a file is really slow, without closing the folder, the next right click is instantaneous.

Thanks. it works for me! In my case NVIDIA CPL Context Menu Extension, version 311.46, (C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvshext.dll) caused the problem. I think i'd better update it and check it again!

It does not matter if you disable it since this is a shell extension for your right click but I am not sure if this is a sytem file, I looked in mine and it's not there. Google it and I found this file belongs to a company called TODO in chinese. Maybe you should scan your PC with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - Protect, Detect & Remove Malware From Your PC
