Defrag and SSD

Hello Guys,

For those of you with a SSD boot drive do you leave defrag switched on or do you disable it. I have a Samsung 840pro and the documentation that came with the drive says that Defrag has to be disabled via their Magician software but on various posts around the internet some people are saying that it should be left on with Windows 8 as Windows 8 detects the drive as being a SSD drive and instead of defragging it it does some maintenence on the drive such as trim and garbage collection.

I have emailed Samsung about it and will post their replay when I get it.

Thanks

Tony

I did a fresh format and install of Windows 8 64 Bit Pro. Sorry but I couldn't live without a start button so I have installed the Start8 start menu which is great. I try sometimes not to use it but find metro frustrating to find programs as I have many. I will use Metro for apps only and desktop of serious computing.
SSDs should not be defragged, they work on an entirely different disk management system. I have the Samsung 830 and you won't go wrong if you do what the SSD Magician suggests.

Windows 'should' automatically detect that you have a SSD installed and instead of defragmenting it, re-trim it. I say 'should', because when it first ran on my computer, Windows carried out a full 6-pass disc defragmentation on the SSD. No idea why.

Afterwards, I also found that during 'Automatic Maintenance', even though Windows was set to Optimise Drives daily, it wasn't re-trimming the SSD. Here's my original post on it:
http://www.eightforums.com/performa...t-re-trimming-ssd-drive-during-automatic.html

So, in conclusion, if it works for you as it should, then it will be OK, but as I found it to be unreliable I just switched optimise drives off and instead set up a scheduled task to run '%windir%\system32\defrag.exe C: /L' daily on system idle (the 'L' switch is to 'Perform re-trim on the specified volumes', in this case C: ).

Use SSD Magician and let it optimise the SSD (it'll disable defrag only for the SSD). That's all you have to do.

Downloaded the latest SSD Magician - when I go to install it I get a cryptic message that states "this product cannot be installed on Windows NT 6.1 or later...." WTF!!!!
Anyway, this leads to perhaps a more fundamental issue - when I go to optimize my SSD, Windows will not allow it. I have a Samsung ATIV 500T SmartPC Pro Tablet with a 64 GB SSD (at least that's what Samsung advertises the SSD as) BUT, when I run any system info app, it shows the 64 GB Drive as a MMC - maybe this kind of drive cannot be optimized??

Anyway, is there some sort of app that will allow optimization of thjis machine's drive?

I installed the latest Magician last weekend and it installed fine on my system. It looks like the Magician software completely disables defrag as it will not run from Windows 8 or from CMD, the window will not open at all, no errors. If I enable defrag via Magician it will run fine

I think we'll have to wait for Samsung to come back to me, here is there response so far:-

..

thank you for your email.

Based on our information Windows 8 works little bit differently from W7, so
it should recognized the differences between HDD and SSD and not perform the
defragm on the SSD.

I'll double check again with our engineer and I get extra info I'll come back
to you.

I've just bit the bullet and turned it on, I selected my SSD drive and clicked optimise, the defrag screen had detected my drive as an SSD and in the current status column it says that "optimisation is not available" and when I select the drive the optimization and defrag buttons are greyed out.

That will do me, I will only select my 2 hdd's to defrag once a month and I think I'm going to leave it switched on. The drive has a 5 year warranty if the worst comes to the worst.

Don't use Samsung Magician software!! It is not suitable for W8 yet. The fact that it won't install on W8 (x64) should already turn on some alarmbells.
The tweaks and optimizations the Magician proposes are for W7 and not suitable or required for W8, since W8 does a lot of things automatically or different when an SSD is detected.
Things like Superfetch, Prefetch, Defrag are automatically adjusted by W8 for optimal use of the SSD.

To have W8 recognize your SSD correctly (if not already so) you have to redetermine the Windows Experience Index (or run the Windows System Assessment Tool, winsat.exe).
Then the Defrag tool will automagically turn into the Optimization tool. That will run the TRIM command on your SSD according to set schedule.

The magician software installed on my win 8 pro 64 bit ok. Do you advise that I select the SSD drive in the optimisation schedule, at the minute I've only select d and e drive which are standard HDD's

Yes, you can also select the SSD. W8 will treat it different from the HDD's. It will "optimize" the SSD by trimming and the HDD's by defragmentation. Both will be done according to the selected schedule.
