    windows 8.1

I have had the problem of 100% disk activity causing the computer to slow down so it is almost useless. I read someone had solved the problem by turning off "one drive" in metro (curser to right hand margin...hit settings and change PC drive) turn off one drive settings in all categories. This worked for me, I think it works as one drive is trying to copy/update data in background (that's why you can't see it in the task manager) and that's why it everything is ok once it stop updating. So far so good, seems to be ok and quite a relief. Nothing like a slow Laptop !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Finding Disk Usage 100% Culprit

Thanks to the previous members for mentioning all the usual suspects.

The Task Manager and Resource Monitor screenshot below shows Norton 360 (n360.exe) being the problem. After running a while the problem went away. n360.exe has several files being read.

On a laptop, with one disk the Active time, Read Speed, Write speed go down as the average response time goes up as shown in the snap shot below.

Perhaps, we should have an eight forums resource hog award ranked by the highest average response time and the lowest active time.

Uninstall ALL the A/V software - especially Norton as it's generally a resource hogger.

Windows 8 has a decent built in AV software system. After you've uninstalled the software reboot your system do a windows update as it will update Ms's Virus definitions. Your system will perform light years faster even without an SSD installed.

NORTON in particular is a huge resource hogger --you won't see it either in resource manager.
W8 doesn't need any 3rd party AV product. In any case if you MUST run 3rd party AV software only ever install ONE.

can you base your opinion that norton is resource hogger on some tests or other facts or is it just your belief.
i find my pc with windows 7 and norton antivirus 2013 is faster and smoother than with MS security essentials.
and there is lots of problems with windows 8 and windows defender if you use start is back/start8 or similar software to restore start button.. to populate start menu with entries takes long time when windows defender is on.. with other AV software its instant.

    Hi there

We are talking about WINDOWS 8 / 8.1 here which has it's own in built AV system. Windows 7 is a different OS completely where you need to install AV software because it doesn't have any built in.

My experience in any case is that I've seen a load of PC's which after removing Norton always have run a lot better !!. I don't have "Chapter and Verse" but a lot of experience. I believe my findings are borne out by a lot of other people too. You also don't want to run more than ONE AV system on a computer at the same time - and as W8 has it's own built in system people adding other AV systems aren't often aware of that fact which causes the second system to really slow the machine down.

Norton slows a system down a lot too by excessive disk usages - and particularly on cheaper machines not using SSD's the HDD is always a poor performer and poor HDD's can KILL any system - even a top of the line one with an i7 processor installed.

I can't say about the latest releases of Norton - but on W8/8.1 all this stuff is unnecessary in the first place as I've pointed out as there already is an AV system built in - and don't run more than one AV product together.

    Windows 8.1

I had the same problem which occurred immediately after upgrading from 8 to 8.1. I spent a lot of time following suggestions but what worked instantly for me was I came across a post which at first I thought was a company promotion saying that CCLEANER would solve the problem with their registry clean-up tool, and it's free. I downloaded the software and ran the registry cleaner three times (rebooting each time) and problem solved. My disk usage is running along at 5-10% and no more time wasted. I was just about to the point of buying a new computer but have to thank this company for saving me the time and money.
