28GB missing after windows 8 install

Hello, I've installed windows 8 on 64GB SSD disk, it shows 59GB available on "my computer", however only 8GB available. And I thought that was a bit much eaten up considering its close to a completely fresh install, so I went in to check around, when selecting properties on all folders, including hidden ones, and waiting for it to count up I find the sum of 21GB space taken. So that's 28GB that's missing, how can that be?

Hello flashist, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Double check steps 24 and 25 in the tutorial below to see if they may apply to you for where the missing HDD space is. Step 25 shows you how to free up the space if this is it.

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

Thank you, I will check, though this was not an upgrade install, the HDD was formated and cleaned out before making a fresh install

If that's not it, then you might also use the free program WinDirStat to see if it may be able to help ID what is using up the HDD space.

That was not it, I am currently downloading that program to have a look. However, a thought that jumped into mind, is it any way an SSD can be broken, in such a way that it would lose GBs? While showing it as all were present in my computer? worth trying some SSD diagnose tools of some kind?

    Update: results from WinDirStat

So 16GB ish is windows folder, however there is a section called "<files>" where hiberfil.sys and pagefile.sys are present just under C:, they are 25,6GB and 7,5GB. What are they all about?

If you don't use hibernate, then you could disable it to free up the space used by the hiberfil.sys file.
I would recommend leaving the page file set as "Managed by system" though.

    Thank you, I'll do that.

And yes, apparently the hiberfil.sys grows with RAM, having just installed 32GB it made it go mental. Any way of redirecting it to one of my other harddisks if I were to wish being able to use it?

Additional, additional question, considering I do have 32GB to go at, wouldn't it be rather safe to reduce the pagefile as well? From what I understand, this is virtual RAM?

It's not possible to move the hiberfil.sys file.

Sure, you could reduce the page file if you like. I'd say try using 2 GB (2048 MB), and see how it goes. If you get any "low memory" type errors, then increase the size until you don't get them anymore.
