    Nice work guys!

I don't have a rig anymore, only laptops but even those need to be cleaned of dust once a year or so.

Thanks, guys! Here are a few "before" and "after" pics...

Thanks, everyone! Here are a few "before" and "after" pics. I'll describe what was wrong with this PC...

Besides the cabling mess, there were a lot of issues and I'll mlist them here and what I did to fix it...

    1. Video card (nVidia GeForce 9800GXT+ installed in the PCIe 4x slot instead of the PCIe 16x slot, so I moved it!
    2. Bad RAM, no-name 2x2GB DDR3 RAM with no ID on heat spreaders. I replaced it with 2x4GB Crucial Ballistix 1600 DDR3
    3. CPU waterblock was incorrectly installed and "hanging" off the CPU and too much thermal compound. I cleaned it all up and used the proper amount of Arctic Silver compound and correctly tightened the Antec Kueler H2O 620
    4. The 1TB SATA data drive had the data connector broken off, so we replaced the drive
    5. 80GB SATA boot drive will be replaced with a 120GB SSD as soon as the owner brings me the SSD
    6. The old 500GB SATA hard drive will be replaced with the 2TB WD Caviar Black hard drive
    7. All fans were replaced. The owner had the blue LED fans, so I replaced them with the same kind
    8. I unlocked the AMD x4 Phenom II so it now has 6 cores and I overclocked it to 3.4Ghz from 3Ghz (no voltages changed)
    9. I installed temp probes for the CPU, hard drives and video card. Temps look very good, at least 15 degrees less than what they were at prior to my work....
    10. As soon as the SSD arrives, I'll set the BIOS to "AHCI" and install Win7 "properly", apply all patches, install all the most recent drivers from Gigabyte and nVidia and provide all docs regarding what I did, including BIOS settings...

    11. (It has to go to 11!) I hope Zachary likes his "new" PC!

    Great post Art!
    That's some impressive work.

A complete make-over or should I say upgrade.
It already got twice as better at least, and with the SSD it will fly just as expected.

    Keep up the good work.

Nice rigs, guys! I ran the benchmark programs in a loop for the last 12 hours and the temps are great, and at least 10-15 degrees lower than they were before but I don't know how much of that I can attribute to better airflow because the waterblock was also incorrectly installed and I fixed that (and everything else).

This is my son's friend's rig and he's a good kid. I started him playing the drums about 10 years ago and he then learned the banjo and guitar and he plays in our son's band. I know his father and they are "good people" so I'm glad I could help him out. I won't charge him anything for the work, fans, and 8GB of DDR3 RAM. He's buying the SSD and the 2TB hard drive that will go into the box as soon as I receive them.

He will really appreciate this and I really enjoy doing work for people who appreciate it! I work on friends, family and church friend's PC's all the time and I love to see the expression of their faces when they see the improvements!

The coolest thing on this "build" was being able to unlock the additional 2 cores in the AMD Phenom II CPU! In the BIOS, it was pretty easy to figure out how to do it and I had researched the options available to me with this CPU/motherboard combo on overclockers.net. The lame thing about the board is that there's no "BIOS reset" jumper, so you have to remove the battery to reset the BIOS and the battery is directly below the video card, so that's a reason I would never consider this motherboard for any future builds. It's an old board anyway, but it's just not very well thought-out. Lots of fan headers (that the original builder didn't use!) and the water cooling rig keeps a lot of the open space available for air to circulate.

Another thing I do is put Scotch pads in front of the intake fans(s) to trap as much of the dirt and dust and pet hair before it gets pulled into the case and ruins the fans. I also recommend that the PC is cleaned with a light air compressor "blow-out" at least twice a year in households with pets.

I just cleaned up the video card. When I took it apart, there was dirt and dust completely clogging the blades of the fan and the "radiator assembly". I cleaned everything carefully, applied Arctic Silver thermal compound and put it all back together. Later, I'll see what the temps are again...
