    Sytem Restore Point

How do you make Windows 8 make Restore points on every system change without manually doing it yourself? Like drivers, programs, etc.

    Hello setinhere,

If you have system protection turned on for your Windows C: drive, then it normally does automatically create restore points by default before you install drivers, programs, Windows Updates, etc....

However, it's always a good idea to manually create a restore point yourself before doing anything that you may want to undo if needed.

If need be, you may also would like to increase the amount of maximum disk space used for restore points to be able to keep more of them available.

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

Well I guess I have a problem then. I got caught with the nvidia endless boot loop, and when I went to advance boot option to restore from last saved, it didn't show any saved points for the past two months. The amount of time I've had Windows 8 installed. So I had to do a refresh and lost everything. When I finished that, I checked to see if my restore was active and it was. I then tested to see if it was creating restore points by installing the USB 3 drivers for my motherboard. Nothing, it didn't create one. So what is broken in my setup that would prevent this form happening? My system specs are in my profile.

Oh and when I checked it the first time after my mishap, it did have one restore point. I guess it creates one after a system refresh. Why it created one then and not afterwords is puzzling me.

How big is your allocated maximum shadowstorage.

Btw: it is a lot safer to create images. Those you control yourself, you can store them where you like and add/delete them whenever you see fit. I recommend free Macrium for that: Imaging with free Macrium - Windows 7 Forums

It's set for 1% or 9.1 Gigs. Is System Restore really that unreliable? Even back in Windox XP I never had a problem with it. Did the that go away for Vista, 7, and 8?

9Gig should hold a few restore points (10 to 15 appr.). As you can see for yourself, system restore is not to be trusted. Restore points have the habit of disappearing all the time for no explainable reason.

I use system restore also but don't bet on it. With my Macrium images I never even once had any problems. They saved my bacon many times - and I have full control and see what I am doing. I don't look into a black box.

LOL well I never had any problems with system restore win XP. I guess MS broke it afterwards. It is really a shame on how MS seems to fix things that aren't broken.

Na, never heard of this Macrium Images, I'm saving money up to get a home server so it will fix my current problem. Until then I'll just remember to do a manual system restore for any installs that I do.

There have been a few issues where some defrag programs will wipe out your restore points when used.

Do you dual boot? There have been a few known issues with dual booting that will wipe your restore points each time you startup the other OS.

Plus you lose the restore points (except the first one) when you resize the shadowstorage.

You never heard about Macrium because you are new on the block. I think around here, many people use it. I can see that from the questions and PMs that I get on my Macrium tutorial.
