Sleep/Shutdown issues

Hi,

I recently upgraded my windows 7 to windows 8 pro without too many difficulties. I have an old laptop (sony vaio vgn fz21m with some hardware upgrades, was originally a Vista pc).
I tried the free Windows 8 with a dualboot for a while and everything seemed fine so I decided to buy the upgrade.
Right now I'm encountering two issues:

- When I close my laptop, it doesn't go into sleep mode, it keeps running but the screen turns black and when I open it again I can't do anything except a hard shut down.

- When I select shut down almost the exact same thing happens. It tries to shut down, screen goes black but it keeps running forcing me to do a hard shut down as well (pressing the power button for 5 seconds).

It did not have any of these issues with the dual boot ...

Can anyone help me here?
Thanks!

I'm under the impression that something running in the background is preventing the shutdown/sleep. How can I find out what it is? (driver, software etc)

I googled the issue a bit, found some options like reseting bios, switching off fast start up etc.
That didn't work

I'm pretty sure there's one driver that's not compatible that is keeping my laptop awake and preventing shut down. I just don't know how to find out which one ...
