Solved Windows 8 Scanning and Repairing (C:) on Startup - PROBLEM

Hi all,

I am new to the forum, this being my first post. I downloaded and installed Windows 8 on October 26th. So far, great experience however... the last couple of days when starting my new Dell Inspiron 5720 it is running a "Scanning and Repairing (C) and is getting stuck at 27% (waited over 2 hours) so I hold down the power button and it restarts as normal. Only seems to start the check on every 2nd or 3rd startup. I have googled and read many articles and have since error checked my C: drive through properties with no errors being reported.

I guess my question is what would cause this to all of a sudden start and why and how do I stop it. It is very frustrating . I have completed virus scans, defrag, error checking, etc.

Any assistance would be grateful. The Dell laptop is new but came with Windows 7 in early October. It is 8GB RAM with a 1TB drive running Intel 7.

Thank you in advance. If anyone requires more info to assist in resolving this issue, I will provide.

Cheers.

Hi Rubberdude88 and Welcome to EightForums!

Go to regedit, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager,
Change the BootExecute string to autocheck autochk /k:C *

Thank you MrShowdown. I have changed the key to the following...

autocheck autochk /k \??\C:
autocheck autochk *

I removed the "r" and as you indicated, changed it to a "k". I did not remove the question marks as I am not sure that I should have. I will update this thread after a couple of restarts so I can report back success or failure. :thumb:

Thank you again. I very much appreciate your assistance.

Anyone know what causes it to be stuck at 27%? And, why 27% what's so special about this number?

I feel like this is a very very specific, Microsoft should know how to fix this, but they have not put out any patches. It really is LAME!

Are there any other good CHKDSK alternatives so I can use without repeating stuck at 27% everytime?

I did this:
autocheck autochk /k:C *

And it worked for a couple of weeks but then, incredibly, today it did it again and again I needed to remove the battery to get it started again :(

I am desperate ... any other ideas ???

I am tagging onto this thread for several reasons: I have applied your fix, running Win 8.1 and my systems keeps returning to the autochk/k/c/k/??C:* automatically after I have changed it to match your fix. Any workarounds? The scan and repair completes so there is no disc issues that I am aware of however it takes a long time to boot up.

I have found the problem !

I have figured out what the problem was. I was using glary utilities (which works great with win 7 but not with win 8). In-fact every time I had that problem glary utilities was used before.

Uninstalling the utilities solved the problem :)
