Solved decieving startup time

One thing I've noticed is that while my Windows 8 start screen appears quite quickly on boot, and I can start to do certain things, other services take quite a bit longer to become available. For example, I have to wait quite a while (i haven't timed it, but maybe as long as 20 or 30 seconds) to be able to open a web page, or get into the Windows 8 settings or control panel.
Is this typical? Is there any way to improve this?

Hi , it will be useful to know your PC or Notebook spec before been able to reply to this question

Heh yes... worse with an SSD.

My Windows 7 with SSD boots so fast that the windows KB driver has not loaded and I can't start typing my password for an additional 2 or 3 seconds or my password will be wrong.

Type netplwiz into the start screen. The uncheck the little box that says " user has to logon with password" (or something like that). Provide your password (twice). After that your logon will be automatic.

Well I don't want that... but thanks :)

And even if it DID boot to the desktop instantly, the KB /still/ wouldn't work till the driver finished loading anyway.

Was just pointing out that yes, there is a limit to how fast a machine can boot because the hardware itself or hardware+driver is not entirely ready for some period of time after receiving power.

Just to bump this back to my original issue. I just timed it. My system boots to the point where the Start Screen is totally visible within a few seconds. As soon as my start screen is visible, I click on IE. The big blue IE logo fills the screen and then it sits there for a full 40 seconds before a web page becomes visible. Similarly, I am unable to get into system settings within this first 40 seconds or so. After this 40 seconds, everything behaves as normal (IE opens quickly and immediately displays web pages, for example). Is this normal?

Yes, same sort of thing here.

A mobile phone boots pretty fast doesn't it?

Takes a bit longer for a full blown os to fully load.

You must have something that make your OS wait for it, with SSD as soon as you are in the desktop or start page, apps open near right away. What peripheral is connected to your PC ? some HP printer are know to slow down a boot. Can you take a screen shot of the task manager after a boot, so we can check what's running

It sounds like you are using the touch UI versions of both. Does the same thing happen if you switch to the desktop and launch IE from there? Is it perhaps waiting for your network interface to come up? I just tried it on my laptop (Thinkpad X220, Core i5-2520, 8GB RAM, 60GB OCZ Nocti SSD) with Chrome, and it brings up web pages within a second or two of the desktop showing up.

Perhaps something to do with your Internet proxy settings? Although that should not affect the Control Panel...

I found this when I had XP and changed to a SSD and boot times became shorter. I'd power on the router and computer; after it started Windows and I tried opening Outlook Express or Internet Explorer, there would be a delay before the programs opened, which coincided with the network becoming available. I assumed that for some reason the programs were waiting for the network before they'd open. I did wonder about it!I've noticed the same thing with Windows 8 to a less noticeable extent.I am sure it did not do that with a mechanical HDD though - I seem to recall the programs would have just opened and given an error if the network was initialising.

Hmm. Tonight I'll try through the desktop again, although my recollection is that it was the same behaviour launching IE from the desktop. Tonight I'll see if I can get task manager open immediately after boot to see what's going on.
The only peripheral I have turned-on when I boot is the USB keyboard/mouse, but those both function normally immediately.

The only thing that surprises me in this thread is that a couple of posters have not experienced this. I have one laptop with an ssd, one without, and a stationary. Nothing hanging on, and nothing in "startup". None of these machines can be used immediately on arrival at the desktop. The internet does take a couple of seconds to connect, also.

Use several different computers during a day, so specs are irrelevant.
It should fly on a SSD, something is definitely slowing down.

Startup items:
-Third party services
-many IE addons

Check things in msconfig.

Much of this depends on your hardware setup, and I don't just mean CPU speed and amount of RAM. If you're on wireless, it make take a bit of time for the laptop to associate with the AP. If your desktop communicates to your ISP over DHCP or PPPoE, there could be some delay establishing that link. A few seconds' delay is fine, but 30-40 seconds (as described by the OP) is not normal.

I am sure it did not do that with a mechanical HDD though

It is possible that the slower boot times on HDD gave the network drivers more time to start things up, and thus you did not notice the delay. Upgrading to an SSD removed one bottleneck, but in my experience that simply exposes other bottlenecks in the system.

I seem to recall the programs would have just opened and given an error if the network was initialising.
Depends on what state the network is in. The network between, say, your laptop and wireless router might be up, but the network between the router and your ISP might not be. So an application on your laptop thinks everything is fine, so all it knows is that it sent the web page request (or whatever) and is simply waiting to hear back. It can't always know that there might be some other delay further down the line.

Have a look at this video I just shot of my laptop booting up. I'm using Chrome as the browser, and I had previously cleared the cache so there's no cheating by loading page elements from disk. By the time the desktop appears, the wi-fi network is already established. It only takes Chrome a couple of seconds to launch, and then a few more seconds to bring up this page. I don't have a ton of stuff installed, but you can see my Startup configuration, and that systray icons are still popping up while Chrome is fetching the page.

That's a lot of startup items.
