Hi, I'm currently using Bitdefender total security 2013 and it's a hug resource hog. Before the trial runs out I just wanted to know if I should buy it or stick with Windows 8's built it antivirus? I haven't seen any reviews of the built in antivirus so I'd appreciate it if you guys can tell me your experiences with it? Is it effective and a worthy replacement for Bitdefender 2013 which is recommended over every other security software by almost every reviewer Iv'e read. To be honest I'd rather not have Bitdefender installed because of my laptops performance, I just hope the built in antivirus is good enough.

Thanks,

The built in antivirus is good enough for a careful user. I don't use the built in one. I have avast but I guess the built in antivirus would do the job for you.

The best protection is to avoid sites that spread malware... If you are a relatively safe surfer, then the MS solution is adequate. If you are one who feels compelled to download hacked software from your favorite warez site, then there isn't enough protection for you, and you should register Bitdefender.

With the MS solution, and a good backup just in case, most users have all the protection they need. I haven't needed to rebuild due to a virus or malware since I started using the free MS solution, but feel a good backup is essential regardless of whatever other protection is in place.

Microsoft Security Essentials, which is built into Windows 8, but renamed Windows Defender, has been reported to be a very good AV program and getting better all the time. Also, ensure that you have ActiveX Filtering enable and only allow trusted sites to use it and, if you want additional protection, consider getting Malwarebytes (the inexpensive paid version) and you should be well protected from just about anything. I have all three in operation and haven't had a single issue, even when a regular site that I visit was badly infected with malware.

I use Windows Defender as the one in Windows 8 is said to be far superior to those in previous versions of Windows. I also use the free version of Malwarebytes.
