All Windows 8 apps broken, old Windows 7 programs fine

Just upgraded to Windows 8 a couple of hours ago. Everything was working fine until I turned on 'High Contrast' in Settings/Ease of Access. The setting refused to revert when turned off (tried restarting, etc). After I finally managed to turn it off (Control Panel/Display and then choosing a new theme), every Windows 8 app has become unusable.

Text is warped, appears in places it shouldn't and buttons can't be clicked. The apps themselves are slow to load and quickly close themselves after starting. This happens in Xbox Music, Xbox Video, People, Weather and every other Windows 8 app I've tried. Meanwhile everything on the desktop is fine.

With one exception. If I right-click on the desktop (or in Windows Explorer) the screen turns black, takes a few seconds to return and then every program on the desktop has been closed. I'm guessing this isn't what right clicking is supposed to do.

Attempting to create a new folder in Skydrive through Windows Explorer also results in it crashing. I can create a new folder in my local libraries however.
