windows stuck on logo and nothing works

so basically i got the download version of windows 8 professional 64bit (through dreamspark) and upgraded my windows 7 about a week ago...everything seemed to be good and i was getting used to the new windows but there was one problem namely that when i put the computer to sleep and then turned it back on, it always crashed and restarted...so i read up on it and the main thing i got was to upgrade my graphics adaptar (nvidia geforce gtx 460m)...so i went to the nvidia website and sure enough there was an upgrade available which i downloaded and got onto installing (probably should have uninstalled previous version but then again i've done the same thing before when i installed new versions on windows 7)...about midway through the installation i got an error about C:\temp (don't remember the exact error) and the installation seemed to get stuck...for some reason i thought it would be clever to delete the file and so did so but made no difference and the installation stayed stuck for about 30-40mins after which i decided enoughs enough and restarted the computer...thats when the problems started, it got onto the blue windows logo with the spinning wheel thing underneath but just gets stuck
so then i decided it will be easy enough to get into safe mode and install the driver from in there...how wrong i was...upon trying to get into safe mode it says loading windows files with please wait... at the bottom and loads some file but get stuck at the following one:
    Loaded: \windows\system32\DRIVERS\disk.sys
i've no idea what comes after that but that seems to be the problem as it isn't loading
i tried safe mode, safe mode with networking and safe mode with command prompt all with same outcomes
i then tried last know good configuration option but for some reason that shows the windows 7 glowing logo with starting windows underneath but again stays stuck
i then tried to get into automatic repair mode by pressing shift+f8 which shows the blue windows logo with preparing automatic repair underneath and after a couple of seconds the spinning wheel thing appears on top of the writing but again nothing happens
and just to confirm that nothing apart from the charger was attached with the laptop for the above
as i installed windows off of an external hard drive, i tried connecting the hard drive to the laptop and changed the setting in BIOS so the the harddrive was first priority...i can see the light on HD flashing whilst the blue windows logo appears on the screen but the flashing stops after a couple of seconds and the spinning wheel appears underneath the logo but then again nothing after that

so i've no idea what to do now...i've over 350GB of data on there and no external backups, i mean i thought it would be an easy fix at first but apparently not...what can i do to resolve this as quickly as possible??

Hi it maybe a missing .dll file the missing file after /drivers/disk.sys
Probably need to add the file that comes after the above message. To windows/system32 folder in c drive. I have done it many times but to find the correct .dll file can be tricky. Will have a look for you and tell you how to replace it. Pretty simple fix. Will grt back soon.

No worries also have a look for what im looking for the file that comes after your message. Also have you placed the win 8 cd and booted it it has repair files on the disk and will scan your hdd for missing files. Set bios to boot dvd drive as priority, boot up dvd and go to control panel and run chkdsk and sfc/scannow to see if that fixes the problem if not. Then try the repair tool. Finding the missing file by looking the net can show no results at times. Try those first. A last resort would be that you may have to use refresh but you can lose some of your data as it did with me. Get your self an ubuntu dvd boot it up (dont install) find your c drive look for all your personal files and copy it all to another drive or create another partition. As a pre-caution. Should always have a back up and should always create a system image. Then try the above steps, leave the refresh until i can see if i find that missing file.

I see. Im having trouble finding the file any way. The iso needs to be bootable. The best way is to find another computer and download image burn and burn that iso to a dvd. It then should be bootable. And then use the commands that i gave you as well as if not yet repaired the repair tool on the cd. You can access your drive with a linux ubuntu distro thats just to back up your files it is optional but a safety. Then after you have backed up everything use the refresh tool thats on your burned iso. They are the options i can give you unless others on the forum have ideas.

Another question do you know if you have on board graphics or a dedicated gpu or both. If you have onboard graphics try that or vise versa. It could be hardware since the driver for graphics was deleted. entre bios look for you graphics and see if you can change settings.

To enter bio start computer press either delete key or f2 it can be other keys but try those two. To boot your iso make the dvd player first boot. Place cd in player then find exit and save changes. When it boots windows don't install just look for command promp use the codes then see if you can boot into windows 8 with no cd in dvd drive. If that doesnt work try repairing system with the cd. The n if that doesnt work will move onto next step of getting your files of of the drive then refresh your system. May need hands on help if you can get it.

You may need to purchase the upgrade pro from a store. It should be bootable if you burn it as an iso if not may need to buy one. Around $70.
