Windows 8 is slower to boot up.

My Mouse is slowing down my boot time.

This post has been edited now I have found what is causing the problem.

Okay, so this same post 4 days ago was me saying that my boot had been slowing down after updating to Windows 8, The Dell Logo at the start was taking 20 seconds to load when it should appear instantly, MisterApathy posted a solution to this which was to unplug everything and boot with only the power cord, it fixed all the problems.

But Then when I plugged everything back in, the problem occured again, I tried each device one by one and the mouse appeared to be the thing slowing down the system, I tried it on several USB ports and the problem was consistent.

This never happened on Windows 7, luckily I can use my computer without an external mouse because I have a trackpad.

I can't find a way to enable Verbose Boot in Windows 8, I've tried all the Windows 7 methods and they do nothing, I'm not sure it would help much anyway but It's worth a try!

I use a Logitech G600 MMO Gaming Mouse.

Thanks!

Mine loads so much quicker then Win7 did and shuts down much faster. Maybe the BIOS on your Dell needs to be upgraded.

It says in the above post my BIOS is up to date.

You have so much in your post I just missed it. Maybe one of your programs is taking a lot of time loading, you sure you have enough memory? Your dell might be using your H.D. as a buffer to hold parts of a program as it loads.

Hello there!

Do you perhaps have startup items running at Windows boot? Go to Task Manager and hit the Startup tab, and disable the ones you don't need starting up.

Also, have you done a hard drive defragging?

I have removed all startup entries before I made this post, but It's been happening as soon as I've installed Windows 8, maybe I need to reinstall my BIOS.

And I have done defragging, yes.

I didn't think there would be an easy answer to this, I will re-install my BIOS and see if that makes a difference.

Guys this has been happening since I installed Windows 8, so I don't think It's a software Issue, dell won't let me Reinstall my BIOS because it's up to date, so I don't know what to do

I might try testing the system to see if everything works fine, because maybe it's the Optical Drive which is delaying the startup.

Hi,

It seems to me I'm having the same type of problem than you... but with some variation :

I have two Hard Drive in my laptop, each with 2 partitions.
window7 is on the first drive, and W8 on the second.

After I installed W8 the POST are pretty much never shown, and my computer is on starting, just all the lights are on, the Num lock is working, but the screen stays black.

I don't think it the graphics cards because when i wait some time with all unplug and do the "press power buton" trick,
it may start again...
I say "may start" because it's happening randomly. And when it does it always do the full POST (taking a long long time !)

I think our problems are similar because of the way the bios behaviour is not that of normal.

What I find disturbing is that it happend even when i close W7...

I'm running a Dell Inspiron 17R. The startup seemed extraordinarily slow for the first couple of times after the upgrade. However after several cold boot cycles it finally settled down. I think the system may simply have been building a cache buffer or something and hadn't had time to complete it. After a few hours the system seemed to stabilize and now runs solid. The boot time to the login screen is fairly quick though loading the desktop takes the same amount of time as it did under W7.

After you upgraded your BIOS did you re-set the BIOS settings?
It just sounds like you have some cautious BIOS settings, RAM checks and lame stuff like that, usually after you update your BIOS you have to go set everything back again.
For the Dell logo to be taking time to show, that's nothing to do with Windows, since Windows hasn't even STARTED to load at that point.

Do Dell still include an option to display the POST messages? (i.e kill the logo and show you whats actually happening?)
This sounds like an Extended Memory Test is being carried out, you should go take a look if that option is set in BIOS

I have noticed that signing in with local account (rather than using the live account) and disabling "live tile" on the start screen speeds up boot time. I haven't measured the actual timing, but it's a noticeable difference. Still not as fast as they were claiming it could boot in their commercials.

I updated my BIOS like a year ago when I had Windows 7, I have also reset the BIOS settings and disabled Intel Speedstep.

I will look if I have some extended memory test going on.

Ok based on this... Drivers for Laptops\XPS\XPS 15 (L501X)

Your BIOS should be version A08 at this point, so hopefully it is.
Within your BIOS head to the Boot tab, and make sure "Quick Power on Self Test" and "Boot Up Floppy Seek" (if that still even exists in bios) are both set to Disabled. As far as I know in Phoenix BIOS (which Dell use), those are probably the only two things which would delay your POST time. If the option is there for "Bootup Virus Protection" you could probably disable that for a few extra seconds. And you should set your boot priority so that you are booting from your Windows install location (usually your main hard disk) so that you don't need to waste time detecting whether bootable media is found in your USB or DVD-rom.

Aside that, I am kinda running out of ideas really.

Ok just a couple more suggestions.... (don't ask me why I am trawling the internet over this, but I am LOL)

Dell laptops have a type of BIOS reset you can do, which sometimes can straighten out these more bizarre issues.

- Remove all power and network cables
- Remove the battery
- Press the on switch
- Leave the laptop alone for 10 minutes
- Reinsert the battery and cables
- Start

A few other people reported their boot times getting progressively slower, and it was the result of a dying hard disk.
Maybe get yourself a hard disk diagnostics app and run that just to be safe.
Further still a few people reported issues with the network controller, and after they updated drivers some of them noticed a visible improvement in shutdown/startup times.

These are all just shots in the dark, but you never know one of them might straighten it out.

Dude, you are awesome, this actually fixed it, Thank you so much for spending your time to work out how to fix it!

All it needed was a reset! - My overall boot time is faster too, now 30 seconds compared to 1:08

Can't thank you enough, now I will mark the thread as solved!

There ya go, I guess I was just inspired because I know for a fact Windows 8 is fast, so whenever I hear someone say its not I have to figure out WHY hehehe
