    Runtime Broker

I was looking through my Task Manager last night and saw something called Runtime Broker running. According to this article:

What is RuntimeBroker.exe and Why is it Running?

it's only supposed to take up about 3MB of RAM. However, mine was using up 865MB of RAM and I didn't have apps running in the background. Insane!

I shut it down and didn't notice any issues arising from doing so. Just curious if anyone has any further info on this process and maybe why it was so high in my RAM usage.

I've seen mine get up to a few hundred MB when running, and depending on the heap resources it needs (and how much is running - whether that be desktop or modern apps), it could get pretty large.

If it's getting over 500MB or so, I'd recommend running VMMap against the runtimebroker.exe process, saving the data, .zipping and uploading it somewhere, and letting us review it.

I noticed the same problem with Runtime Broker using 700+ MB. On another forum I saw mention of a Windows Store app called "The Time" that was potentially causing a memory leak. I had this app installed, uninstalled and restarted, and Runtime Broker is now only using about 3.5 MB of memory.

So you may want to make a list of Windows Store apps you have installed, and then uninstall one at a time and restart to see if this makes a difference.

You know what? I have The Time installed on my Metro. I'll uninstall that and see if it helps. If it doesn't, I'll run VMMap as club suggested.

I'll post my results this evening. Until then, thanks for the helpful answers, folks!

Ok, I ran "The Time" with my Task Manager open and monitored it throughout the evening. Runtime Broker steadily got larger and larger as the night went on and got to about 500MB. I uninstalled "The Time" and Broker immediately fell to 1MB. It never got above 5MB for the rest of the night.

    Problem solved. Thanks so much!!!

Well, not for The Time. I wonder if they know they have a wonky app?

You could provide a review that mentions it in the store for the app.

Hi everyone. I wrote The Time and have been working on this for the past couple of days. I've isolated the problem down to a single call to the Windows Runtime that causes the leak. I'm putting together a repro case to send to MSFT so they can fix it, but in the meantime I've rewritten The Time to avoid this admittedly handy functionality.

I'm going to be submitting the fix in an hour or so, but it likely won't be in the store until late next week due to their 5-7 day turnaround.

If you'd like to use The Time in the meantime you should be able to periodically kill the Request Broker process manually.

Thanks for your feedback -- and patience! I certainly wish I could get this in peoples' hands sooner.
