Problems getting PC to go to sleep and stay asleep

    Man....talk about a pain in the @ss....

I installed windows 8 on Friday and have been fiddling with it all weekend. One thing I noticed is that the pc would not go to sleep. Fiddled with the power options and made sure everything is set right in the bios acpi settings(set to S3, otherwise known as standby, sleep, or suspend to ram). But it would not go to sleep at the scheduled time I set in power options. Setting the power button to put it to sleep and pressing it simply caused the pc to go to sleep for about two seconds and then start right back up.

So I figured something must be preventing it from going and staying alseep. Did some reading and came across a handy command prompt command:

    powercfg -devicequery wake_armed

This command lists devices that are currently configured to wake the computer from any sleep state. I had three devices come back. The mouse, the keyboard, and the nic card. I unplugged the mouse and keyboard USB dongle and tried putting it back to sleep. Still didn't work . The pc came right back on again after a couple of seconds. I then went into the nic card properties and disabled the wake on LAN. BINGO! The computer went to and stayed asleep. And then came the next problem.

Trying to resume from sleep resulted in the computer basically restarting again from boot. It acts like its going to come back up, and then promptly reboots and my graphics card fans spin at full speed for like 5 seconds. So did some more reading and came across this command:

    Powercfg.exe /hibernate off

That commands disables hibernation and it fixed it. It now sleeps and resumes like it should. Don't ask me why disabling hibernation fixed it considering I didn't have it set to hibernate anywhere I could find, but it did.

    Just thought I'd share. thanks!

Well I guess I spoke too soon. I went to wake the computer from sleep this morning after sleeping all night and it did the reboot thing again. So after some undetermined length of time being asleep, it wont resume properly and instead reboots. Any ideas?

I have had no sleep issues since disabling Hibernate under the power settings. I believe hibernate is the prob. It is a deeper sleep state. Try turning it off.

From win8 desktop (not metro) choose settings on the right, then control panel, then power options icon, then change plan settings of your current plan, then change advanced power settings, then expand Sleep and Hibernate After. Choose Never.

You might also switch off allow hybrid sleep but mine is currently on and all is ok.

I'm positive hibernate has been disabled. I disabled it with the command

    Powercfg.exe /hibernate off

It doesnt even show up under power options any more as an option.

I'll keep an eye on mine. So far so good. I usually put mine to sleep with the sleep button on my MS keyboard. Not sure if I've allowed it to sleep automatically since my Hibernate fix....

What is your mainboard? I'm running on an Asrock P55M Pro.

You sound like you know your way around your machine, but if you don't, download and run Speccy from www.speccy.com for exact details.

My motherboard is an Asrock Z77 extreme9. Yeah, its definitely having something to do with the length of time its in sleep. I can verify that I can wake it from sleep after an hour but somewhere between an hour and leaving it asleep all night is causing it to start over when I try to resume in the morning.

PC specs? What GPU? Latest Win 8 drivers and BIOS? Clean install or upgrade?

Interestingly, I've read that people who have Asrock mainboards who are trying to run OSX Lion have encountered similar sleep issues. Many were able to fix it by changing any one of the following in Bios. I suggest you try them one-by-one and/or all together to see what happens for you.

    1. Disable legacy USB
    2. Disable internal PLL overvoltage
    3. Enable Execute Disable Bit (or disable it if it's enabled already)

Some also said they had sleep issues when using Corsair brand SSD as their HDD.
