    Intel Ethernet Adapter Not Connecting

Am trialling Windows 8 at the moment and while the wired Ethernet connection on the test machine was working initially following the Windows install, it is now out of action: no lan, no internet. I've tested the network cable with another (Win 7) machine and it works fine. Am connecting directly to a broadband modem/router with an in-build DHCP server and no restrictions of note.
Windows detects the on-board adapter as an Intel 82566DM-2 Gigabit Network Connection and reports it as 'working properly' in Device Manager. The driver version is reported as 9.13.41.1 dated 27/09/2011 from Microsoft. However, when the machine starts up it fails to obtain an IP address from the DHCP server and defaults to whatever IP Windows uses when in doubt (169.254.83.87). An ipconfig /renew command results in an error ("error occurred while renewing interface Ethernet: unable to contact your DHCP server...").
I also noticed I have a Microsoft Kernel Debug Network Adapter listed in Device Manager, which I have disabled in an unsuccessful attempt to resolve this problem.
I have tried assigning a static IP/gateway to the Intel device and have also disabled IPv6. Have disabled the Windows Firewall. No success. Have tried a winsock reset and reboot, no success.
Am running an MSDN copy of Win 8 Enterprise x64, activated.
I am puzzled because, like I said, this was working initially. I have no Windows Updates showing as installed, no antivirus installed, nothing in the hosts file. Have installed a bare minimum of software, after which the network was still working.
I downloaded the Network Adapter Driver for Windows 8 from Intel's site (v17.3) (http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...adType=Drivers) which (I believe, Network Connectivity — What is new in the latest Intel® Ethernet Software release?) should apply to this interface but installation failed with the error "Cannot install drivers: No Intel Adapters are present in this computer".
No event log entries of note.
    Any thoughts?
    Cheers,
    Michael

Try some of those earlier drivers if u think you have covered everything else if they wont install use compatibility mode with windows 7
To install a driver in compatibility mode - right click the setup.exe file - click properties - click compatibility - check run in compatibility with w7 - check run as administrator - leave the rest blank. Start setup.exe and install.

i think your router is the problem, after reconsidering - I would work on it, and forget the intel adapter - download the manual for the router from the manufactures site - recheck how to reset the router, and make sure your setting the router up properly - it will have all the steps in the manual. The Microsoft Kernel Debug Network Adapter is normal in device manager.

I am having similar problems with my ethernet adapter not initialising on boot up. This started when I upgraded to Win 8 from 7. I have to enter device manager to disable, then re-enable the adapter for it to work. Alternately I can run the troubleshooter which will eventually do the same thing. I have reset/rebooted the router on several occasions to no avail, the router has worked perfectly before the upgrade so I cannot envisage a fault with it. I have the latest driver (have checked for a newer driver but am unable to find one). Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as this is a constant annoyance!

Is it possible to connect directly to the modem part of the modem/router? You could try leaving the router part out of the situation as a test of the router. Have you updated the modem/router firmware?

Update to my last comments - I have tried connecting the ethernet port directly to my ReadyNAS network storage device and I have the same problem, I have to reset the ethernet adapter before it will connect. It seems, therefore, that the issue cannot be attributed to the router and is not exclusive to internet connection. The adapter just will not work on first boot up of PC. I am convinced this must be a problem caused by Windows 8, possibly an incompatibility issue?

Just found this on Microsoft Forum...

Question: asked on Nov 19, 2012
Windows 8 will not connect to internet

I have to reset ethernet adapter everytime I start computer. Tech support admitted it was a fundamental problem with Windows 8 and they have no answer help! In fact they suggested I used VISTA!

    Says it all!
    It then followed with this...

    Method 4:
If the issue still persists, uninstall and reinstall the network adapter drivers and check if that helps. Follow these steps.
    Step 1:
Uninstall network adapter driver. Follow the steps:
    a. Move the mouse to bottom left corner and right-click on the ‘Start icon’.
    b. Select ‘device manager’.
    c. Expand ‘Network adapter’ and right-click on ‘network adapter’ and select ‘uninstall’.

    Step 2:
Download and install the latest network adapter drivers in Windows 7 compatibility mode and check if that helps. Follow these steps.
    a. Download the network adapter driver from the computer manufacturer’s website.
    b. Right-click on the driver and click on ‘properties’.
    c. Click on the ‘compatibility’ tab and check the box ‘Run this program in compatibility mode for’ and select Windows 7 operating system from the drop down.
    d. Click on ‘Apply’ and click ‘OK’ and run the file to install it.

I have just gone to the VIA Technologies website and found an updated driver which fixes a Windows 8 issue with their Via Rhine II fast Ethernet adapter. This driver is NOT FOUND by Windows doing its own search for an updated driver. I have installed the driver and (so far) the problem seems to be cured and my adapter is working immediately on boot up. I hope this helps others with the same problem, albeit with perhaps a different make adapter.
NB. I did not need to install in compatibility mode.

Great. Glad you didn't have to go back to Vista.
