    Browsers not working

I just did an upgrade installation from windows 7 ultimate to windows 8 professional and I am having network problems.

I can successfully ping and complete tracert out of my network and onto the internet, however Google Chrome, Firefox and IE 10 and not able to resolve and load a webpage. My DNS is working, it is configured statically at 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, I am able to resolve hostnames and IP's.

Any suggestions? This is my first experience with windows 8.

Sounds like your upgrade went awry. I also had a problematic upgrade experience and the system was half-dead, so I ended up doing a Refresh and now all is well.

This problem usually has to do with TCP/IP or Winsock requiring a reset.

Winsock entries tells Windows 7 how to access your network services. Additionally, your TCP/IP protocol can be corrupted. The TCP/IP protocol is a stack of 4 layers that includes several transport layers, but when this stack is corrupt you will constantly have connectivity issues.

netsh winsock reset catalog (reset winsock entries)

netsh int ip reset reset.log hit (reset TCP/IP stack)

I got a little frustrated in the time after I made this thread and I tried to simply format my drive and re install from the windows 8 USB boot disk I made. Now I am getting a much worse error, the /boot/BCD is missing, I have tried going into diskpart and verifying he partition as active and I have tried bootrec /fixmbr & /rebuildbcd but nothing seems to work. I am going to make a new boot dvd and try again tonight, I notice that when booting off a USB if you then use the USB to repair the installation there will be issues where the USB boot disk as records of the installation on multiple volumes. Very problematic and difficult to navigate through.

But the first thing I learnt when I was in school is make backups, so if all fails re image windows 7 and restore file from backup.

A questions about resetting the TCP/IP stack, I am able to use successively ping public addresses, so it does have network access. However applications such as skype or http(s) were unable to get access. Could it have been something with a firewall. Does windows 8 have new security that blocks specific ports rather than just applications?

Windows Firewall doesn't block SSL connections, probably the browser can't recognize the certificates which the website has, and might not permit to resolve the DNS.
