I've had to replace my ISP router now and now Windows 8 preview is showing I'm connected to Network 3. How can I rename this and delete the previous networks?

Thanks.

About the only thing I can change in Windows 8 RP is the Network adaptor name by going into the Network and Sharing Center, then left side to Change Adaptor Settings, right click the adaptor you are using, choose "Rename" change name to what ever you want.

Each of these "Dead" networks have various key entries in the registry, you could try searching for the actual name, including the current one, and deleting all related registry keys, then re adding the network to get the plain "Network".

This is not something that I would recommend as, Windows 8 is so new, although it appears to use the same system for this, there is no knowing what side effects this could produce.

I've already searched the registry and it does not show any of the old networks. I'm not trying to change the adapter name. Just the name of the network I'm connecting to. This used to be stored in the registry with Windows Vista & 7 and you were able to change it in the Network connection previously. It seems they are trying to "simplify" Windows 8 but I'm finding too much stuff that is hidden. Which would be fine for casual users but I like to get into the guts of my system and remove stuff that no longer needs to be there.

I know that the ones used for wireless are there, (I actually got to WiFi 32 after a few issues with an old USB WiFi adaptor), Each entry however must be searched for individually "WiFi 30" "WiFi 31" Etc, Each entry (in the data) has its own key created In I think the HKLM branch somewhere in the Controlset sub branch.

This should be true for the "Network x" entries, of course you have to search for the exact match

For me, changing the adaptor name also changes the name of the network at the Network and Sharing Center.

I see no other place where a network name is showing up, maybe if you can post a screen shot of this?

Changing the name of my Network Adaptor also changes the name of my Network, notice where it say's Rob's Network?

Same here. Everytime that I use my 3G Modem the network connection name is increased +1.

To be honest I'm not too surprised at my issues, I'm using an old USB WiFi Adaptor, the latest x64 drivers are vista ones from 2007, so the fact I'm getting a connection at all is quite remarkable. It's only a test rig and it was the only wireless dongle I could spare at the moment

Open an elevated cmd prompt (this is a must), and run the following two commands:
Code:
set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
devmgmt.msc
Once you run both of these commands and device manager opens, click View > Show hidden devices, and your "phantom" devices will show up. You can delete all of the other unused network devices from here. Once you've done that, go back to your elevated cmd prompt, and run the following command:
Code:
ncpa.cpl
This will open the classic Network Connections control panel, which will show you your network connections and their names. Rename from here as you desire.
