Connecting to WPA2-Personal

I just set up my new router and while my laptops with windows 7 are easily connected with ability to provide just the pass-code I cannot even do this at all on my windows 8 desktop. I cannot right click or anything on my wireless connection. I create a new one and it says the stuff doesn't match and I've checked the pass-code and such and everything is fine except there is no option for WPA2-Personal but I'm assuming using the option of WPA should be just fine. Either way it is annoying me how they have managed to make this easy task harder in windows 8 when it was so simple in windows 7. Does anyone know a solution?

I don't think you have to create a new wireless connection in Win8. Just look for your network name in the list.

My laptop is my only computer. It is about 2 years old.
It is on the list and I did see it. However, when connecting to it they don't ask for the pass-code which they should since I've never connected to that connection previous to this this time. But they don't and I cannot edit the connection to give it a pass-code. In windows 7 I found the connection on the list and when I wanted to connect the firs thing it asked me was for the pass-code. Then it would connect to the wireless connection and ask me what type of connection it is. In windows 8 it connects without asking or letting me add the pass-code and the connection ends up not working. I cannot right click on the connection or do anything to the connection at all besides press connection or uncheck connect automatically.

Basically on the usability side and user-friendly side it is not as easy to use as windows 7 in my opinion.

Weird...when I connected to my network it asked for a password.

It probably did ask me when I had the old connection for the first time I connected. I can't remember. But right now it's irritating me.

This is going to sound stupid, but try it anyway to be sure: reboot your router and try connecting.

Here is how it's supposed to work in Windows 8.

If you’re having trouble connecting to your wireless network, first try updating the driver for your wireless device. See the Locating drivers thread for instructions about finding drivers.

Make sure your wireless router is properly set up. See these instructions about setting up wireless routers.

If you’re still having trouble connecting, make sure that wireless connections are turned on:

1. On the Start screen, type Control Panel, click the Apps filter, and then tap or click Control Panel.

2. In the left pane, tap or click Wireless.

3. In the right pane, verify that Airplane mode is off and that Wireless devices are on.

Then, check the current connections:

1. Open the Settings charm by swiping in from the right or pointing the mouse to the lower-right corner of the screen.

2. Tap or click the networking icon, indicated by either a monitor with a network cable (for a wired connection) or a set of five stepped bars (for a wireless connection).

3. Under the list of wireless networks, choose your network, and enter any credentials needed to connect to the network.

Thanks for the help. Tried all the steps but it just won't work. I guess it's okay for now since it's not my work computer.

my experience today was pretty strange in this regard - jumped right on my supposedly secure network without asking for a passcode. i'd love to know how that trick was done. pretty disturbing.

since you're a senior member this is probably too basic:
- checked the device in device manager? everything ok there. make sure its not just the MS miniport driver but a real device
- right click and disable the wireless device, then re-enable and see if you get a challenge
- in Network Settings, find the wireless "connection" which should = 'adapter' and look under Wireless Properties, uncheck "connect automatically" until you're happy. then click the security tab and enter, or not, the passcode.

The senior member status is probably more related to posting than actual status. Either way there is nothing too basic for me. You are never too great to learn. So I am thankful that you answered. It just doesn't work. But that's not your fault. For whatever reason I cannot enter any passcode and it won't connect by itself either.

OP, I may have missed it, but to be clear: which version of windows 8 are you using.
and, I picked up that this is a desktop system, but wifi connection. If wrong, correct us.

excite - this isn't what I see: what I see is that when win 8 RTM installs, whatever the net link is that it can find, it gives it a generic name. it didn't name mine by either of the physical devices nor by the ap. just 'network'.
if I were trying to work on it and trying to id by what it calls the lan, it would be misleading.

I don't think you have to create a new wireless connection in Win8. Just look for your network name in the list.

so, with the cat5 adapter disabled, the wifi enabled, right-click on the wireless connection [not the adapter per se though I think you arrive at same place] hit 'status', then 'wireless properties', do you not have a 'Security" tab there? and all security shows is the encryption type and the passcode field.

What adapter are you referring to? I don't even have status for the connection. Thank you for helping me out. I have never encountered a problem as annoying as this. It's making it difficult for me to use this computer to do some of my design work.

My Computer

open control panel, then in the search field at the top just type : adapter
then it will show the places where the name occurs, including a Networking section, under there 'network connections" - something like that.
open it
pick the WIFI connection [you should show a wifi and a ethernet which isn't connected]
highlight the wifi, right click, choose 'Status'
on the window that pops up, hit the Security tab

Ah okay, I know what you are talking now. Yes, I tried that I don't even have a status to click on. Thanks for the help!
