OP, I may have missed it, but to be clear: which version of windows 8 are you using.
and, I picked up that this is a desktop system, but wifi connection. If wrong, correct us.

excite - this isn't what I see: what I see is that when win 8 RTM installs, whatever the net link is that it can find, it gives it a generic name. it didn't name mine by either of the physical devices nor by the ap. just 'network'.
if I were trying to work on it and trying to id by what it calls the lan, it would be misleading.

so, with the cat5 adapter disabled, the wifi enabled, right-click on the wireless connection [not the adapter per se though I think you arrive at same place] hit 'status', then 'wireless properties', do you not have a 'Security" tab there? and all security shows is the encryption type and the passcode field.

What adapter are you referring to? I don't even have status for the connection. Thank you for helping me out. I have never encountered a problem as annoying as this. It's making it difficult for me to use this computer to do some of my design work.

open control panel, then in the search field at the top just type : adapter
then it will show the places where the name occurs, including a Networking section, under there 'network connections" - something like that.
    open it
pick the WIFI connection [you should show a wifi and a ethernet which isn't connected]
highlight the wifi, right click, choose 'Status'
on the window that pops up, hit the Security tab

Ah okay, I know what you are talking now. Yes, I tried that I don't even have a status to click on. Thanks for the help!
