driving me nuts. something about 8 is diff than 7 with regard to setting up Network, and Type of network.
This seems to default any new network connection to "Private", whatever that means.
In order to share in a Homegroup I need the network type to be "Home".

how?

I feel like Groundhog Day....

Private network is the new Home network with Windows 8, they just call it private network now. There is private network then guest and public but private is the one to use for Homegroups.

It works well with the Homegroup as designed.

so let me rephrase. I have a homegroup serving 2 other clients that are Win7. I cannot browse anything in that homegroup, it shows as "not accessible" when I try to access the owner machine of the main Homegroup.
if I need to setup my own [on win8] homegroup, how? I see no setting/function that will permit that?
Or , what is the proper way?

when I nuke the whole network, restart, rediscover, get on the net [defaults private] and find the homegroup [windows 7 desktop] and "Join", the process of attempted credentialing results in "windows no longer detects a Homegroup. to create one, continue..." but as soon as I bail out of that, it rediscovers the Homegroup.. wash/rinse/repeat.
I can latch the homegroup owner via ordinary means, and login with my user/pwd, but can't get homegroup to work, nor can I create one.

and, an aside... one would think that if I simply login to the other system and copy files, it would do so at network speed, but it doesn't. everything else is at full G speed, but not that act. it CRAWLS along. I've seen that on 7 to 7 also in the past

I'm not sure what the problem might be but for me setting up the new Homegroup with Windows 8 worked the same as with Windows 7. The option to join or create a Homegroup should be right there in the Network and Sharing center, lower left on the page where it says Homegroup. The Homegroup trouble shooter might help in the link below.
Ultimate Troubleshooting Guide for Windows 7 HomeGroup Connection Issues

When in doubt you should leave the Homegroup from all machines then create a new one and rejoin from all machines.

appreciate the effort.
I never succeeded, but the machine is deployed elsewhere now.
everybody else is happily enjoying the Homegroup. I spent a couple hours trying one thing, then another with no success. from the windows 7 systems, they could discover the 8 machine and login as a remote user, but no group. I "forgot" the network, tried to have it NOT discover the homegroup, etc. tried to create one on the 8 machine, no dice. unjoin/join

It sounds like you are trying to set up a Homegroup remotely?

Homegroups only works on the LAN, I don't believe it's possible to set one up remotely from another network.

Same issue here. All caused by having to reinstall onto new and old computers which crash. Licensing issues now too. I will say that you should check that all your network adapters are the same by right clicking on the wifi adapter in network and sharing. I notice that my computer that won't connect to homegroup or show the join link is using the REaltek family pci (something like that im on different pc now) and the other two on the homegroup show the realtek RLT...802....I need to first start here and try to figure all this mess out. I have so many issues going on right now but im going to start here. hope it helps
