Limited Connection

Yesterday we were given an old HP running 8.1. I fired it up and began the process of making it ours. I installed Classic Shell, Malwarebytes, and CCleaner. I then started Windows Update and walked away as it installed 55 updates. Since the reboot, I have had Limited access to my wifi network.

Now, my Google-Fu is not weak. I have tried upgrading the wifi card's driver, downgrading the driver, uninstalling the card, a whole bunch of netsh cmd stuff that I didn't understand, resetting the router even though every other device in the house works and some other stuff that has been purged from mind by this cloud of pure hate that has consumed me.

Oh, and System Restore isn't an option because my dumb ass didn't create restore point before hitting Update. Please help.

EDIT: Also tried rebooting the modem, and starting in Safe Mode with Networking. Still no change. If I set it to automatically get an IP address, it always defaults to a 169.254.x.x address. Forcing a static IP in the correct range also has no effect. This is driving me crazy!

Welcome to the forum. 169 IP range means it's not getting an IP you can try setting a static IP does it ask for password when you try? It can be corrupted wireless profile delete it and try again. Can you try via cable as that tells us the networking is ok

Tried setting a static IP, no change.

Not sure how to delete a wireless profile, but I will Google and follow the procedure when I get home. Will also be dropping by the store after work to pick up a cable so I attempt a wired connection as well. Thank you.

I've been fighting that problem with My G780 over 4.5 Years starting with Win 8.0 and pretty much learned to live with it. I just restart and the Wi-Fi will be connected. Sometimes it might take two or three restarts and that's when I get "Crazy". The next Months KBs will Normally fix the problem. Then a further update will cause the problem again and repeat.

I found turning Off Hibernate and Fast Boot helped on The Worse Updates so I leave them like that.

Wired connection failed too. Same issue. It's just unable to establish a connection at all. When I try to ping anything it says Transmission Failed. I assumed the problem is software related since I had internet all morning before the Update but now I'm not so sure.

Open a admin cmd prompt then type these lines after all of them reboot

netsh advfirewall reset
netsh branchcache reset
netsh int ip reset
netsh int ipv6 reset
netsh winsock reset

The following command was not found: branchcache reset

On both ip reset and ipv6 reset it gave me 3 OKs followed by Resetting , failed. Access is denied.

Still a Limited Connection after reboot.

I don't seem to be able to. I have never seen such a spartan BIOS. There are hardly any options at all, and absolutely nothing dealing with peripherals.

I really appreciate your help by the way. I won't blame you if you give up on this system though. I'm frustrated enough with this dang thing that I am seriously considering installing DouDou Linux on it and giving it to my toddler.

There is a lot having this problem on MS forums and MS hasnt come up with an answer. You could try unpluging and removing the cmos battery see if that resets it. Was this a result of an update if it was as a short term solution note the updates then remove them one at a time or use system restore

Spent hours trying various updates. Finally got frustrated and allowed Linux to wipe Windows out completely. Wifi connected automatically and easily under Linux Mint.

I thank you profusely for your help.
