After turning on everything I know about network discoveries and sharing options I can only see the new machine(8.1 Pro) and the drives but cannot access any of the files on the drives from my XP network. What am I missing?

I have the same problem and have spent days trying to solve it. My 8.1 machine will see drives on the xp machine, but the xp machine can't connect to drives on the 8.1 machine. I get "path not found". I have gone thru all steps I can find; same workgroup name, all share options turned on, network discoveries on, firewalls disabled, static ips, all required system services running. Nothing seems to help.

On my XP/8.1 network, I use only a workgroup, as the XP machines cannot join the homegroup.
Thus, to connect/access the shared directories on the 8.1 machines, I made the shared directories and their files accessible to 'everyone' with 'read+write' access.
On the XP machine in Win.Explorer address-bar, type \\Name-of-your8.1machine
Wait a couple seconds, and all the shares will be visible.
