Downloads slowing up everything else

I did a clean resintall of Win 8.1 Pro x64 last week on my desktop PC and one thing I forgot to check before starting had to do with download speeds. Some months ago, after a Charter system uprade, my larger file downloads with IDM jumped from ~3.6 mb/s max to 8.6 mb/s. The downside was that those faster ones were slowing everything else needing internet connectivity to a crawl. Someone who knew about this, on a forum that I can't find now, had a fix for it, which brought everything back down to the 3.6 mb/s level. I'm forgetting if it was a network settings adjustment within Windows (most likely) or with the router software (TP-Link Archer C8), which I have the cable modem line going through. Anyone know what the adjustment I'm looking for might be? Thanks,

Did you put in a ticket with Charter to have them check their equipment. If you are doing any kinds of Torrents, that can slow things down.

Also if you have line noise, it will also cause issues.

No, it's not Charter. As my post indicated, I've been here before not long ago and know it's a matter of making an adjustment on my computer to some settings in Windows or elsewhere. It's a matter of better distributing the throughput, if that's the term, not the large file size per se. It shows up with larger files using IDM (not torrents) of about 400 mb or larger, because they enough time to run for it to affect other things. I just wish I could remember on what forum the advice came from.

Again downloads will not slow things down, unless someone is doing a lot of network intense tasks, say running a Torrent server.

Also you do not know if it is a Charter issue, unless you go into the Gateway or Modem and look for connection errors. Some modems & gateways are just crap. You need to start there, because there is really nothing you can adjust in Windows, since it self manages network connections.

Also if you are using some third party tool, attempting to think that it will speed up downloads. You do not need it, with the faster Internet connections.

Internet Download Manager was originally intended for slower speeds, but there has never been real proof that it worked as stated.

There's always one. I seem to be a magnet for it.

The solution lies in the router settings. I just don't know which.

One of what? There is nothing on the router that would fix this. QOS does not magically change on its own. Get rid of the third party tool and you will most likely see your speeds go back up. If you want to check the Charter Speeds, use Shaper Probe. ShaperProbe

Again there is always one what? You asked for help, no one else answered your question, and now you are acting like you thought that posting was just a game. At this point, have fun figuring it out all on your own. Especially since you are not mature enough to cooperate with those willing to volunteer their time helping others, but of course you obviously do not need it. Have a nice time figuring it out.
