Default Gateway Not Available

Hello all,

Essentially on my apartments network I can connect and get Internet access, but at random intervals while still maintaining a connection to the network I lose all Internet access. If I run the network repair diagnostic it resets the wireless adapter says it fixed the problem of the default gateway not being available and access is restored only to be booted in the same fashion a varying amount of time later repeating the cycle.

Windows 8.1 hp envy x360 less than a month of use.

Also not sure if it's relevant or not but to put it in reference it is only this network I am having trouble with. Used to have issues connecting to it at all and would BSOD occasionally but I believe I have solved this by updating some drivers and removing McAfee (meant to anyway but this forced my hand and beat laziness).

If you are losing connection, that means that their Access Point is not powerful enough, or that they do not have enough Access Points to cover the whole building.

You can try an external USB adapter with a USB extension cable and see if that helps any. they do make USB Dongles with 2.5db antennas on them.

I'm not so sure that is the issue. My phone and xbox 360 have held the connection fine, as well as my roommates pc and I refuse to believe 2/3 of those have better network adapters than me. Also I never lose the network just Internet access. In fact my connection is always fairly strong even when I lose Internet access. You may very well be right but I'd like to leave this open for other possibilities before I shell out money for a solution I'm not sure is right.

So I found a working fix for all parties interested. I don't know why it's working so if anyone would care to explain here's what worked.

I switched my wireless mode from 802.11a/b/g to 802.11b and I have had no connectivity issues since. I understand this caps my speed but my isp here throttles our speed anyway so it's a non-issue. Still curious to understand what this fix is indicative of so I'll leave it unsolved if anyone would like to enlighten me.

You will only get a max burst of 10 mb/s, but you have to do what you have to do. At least they left the Wireless-b operating on their Access points. Any MDU setup, will always be throttled either at the Smart Switch, Access Point or Router through QOS scheming. That way no one person attempts to overload the bandwidth for others to be able to use. Of course if you tighten the controls too much or have too many users on the network, you will see slow downs that way.
