LAN shared folder Win7 to Win8.1 with login

    Hi,

I have bought a new laptop that comes with Windows 8.1. In my desktop computer that has Windows 7 I want to share some folders with the laptop through LAN.

The users in each computer are different. I want that when I try to access the shared folder from the laptop, it ask for login with the Windows 7 user, is that possible? Or is it necessary that the two users have the same name and password?

    Thanks

Yes you can set up network shares assigned to certain people. Which you should be using a NAS, not another computer.

If it is stuff that is worked with all day, get a NAS.

    Thanks for answering!

I think using a NAS is a bit excessive for what i want. I would like to do something simpler.

I only want to access some files occasionally, with different user in different computers. Is that possible or I need the same user in each computer?

    Thanks!

Not really. It is always available, unlike a cloud drive which could go offline, or not available if your Internet goes down.

I use my NAS to save backups to.

In your situation, the computers have to both be on. Also if a user gets delete happy, you could end up losing everything.

As for shares, just keep them in the Public folder. But you are again going to run into issues of not always available.

The old school way, was handing USB pocket drives back and forth.
