Sounds more like you Upgraded from Win7 to Win8.1. The update for Win8.1 would have been for Win8.0. The everything formated etc part suggests the formatting wiped out the driver software for the Wi-Fi and you would have to get that from Acer. Maybe Windows Update will have it or if the device is showing in Device Manager you could right-click it and choose to update the software, be sure to be connected to the Internet.

Not all laptops that run Windows 7 are 100% compatible with 8. A lot of those machines were designed with Vista & XP in mind. Mainly for the drivers side.

The OEM's never intended them to be used with 8, when Microsoft gave them the spec's, etc.

Yea, chances are if there are no 8.1 drivers on the Acer site then they are basically saying it isn't supported. Would help to know model of laptop and wireless adapter.

Post a snapshot of a full screen Device Manager window:

To open Device Manager, press Windows key+r, type devmgmt.msc and press Enter or click GO. Make it full screen. Expand any sections with yellow or red marks in them.
