Solved Yet another Fileshare problem

Hi,

I have read the existing threads on problem accessing fileshares, but to no help.

I have quite a few computers at home all win7. One of them is a server and I share my big drive with photos and music from that. I configured it so that passwords are not needed, as I think my home network is secure enough.

All win7 machines can reach the share without problems, without username / password just as I have set it up, but my win8 machine says I dont have access rights.

  • I have tried setting up credentials perfectly matching the server user ID on the win8 machine. Both based on Machine name and IP adress to be secure.
  • I have tried creating an account on the server matching my windowslive ID used on the win8 machine.
  • I have tried turning on and off homegroup on both sides (something I dont normally use)
  • I can browser the "User" folder at the server, but no shared drives or folders other than that.

This is driving me crazy....

Any ideas???

In order to gain access to those drives try going into the Security tab of the drive, hit the Edit button, then the Add button, type Everyone into the permissions window, after that hit OK, then apply then apply again. You should now have access to that drive from your Windows 8 machine.

Same issue

Upgraded to 8 myself. Same issues now, my win 7 machines can access my win8 machine, but my win 8 machine can not access the win 7 machines. It can display the folders, but the folders show as empty.

I just set up a new Homegroup after I installed Windows 8. There is no problems accessing files far as I can see.

When in doubt leave the Homegroup on all machines then set up a new one.

Yes sometimes reboots are required after creating the new Homegroup, initializing the shares can also be very slow on older machines when you first set up the Homegroup. Glad you have it working now. :)
