    internet failure

    I have a Samsung 500T1C laptop running windows 8.
Frequently it fails to connect with the internet despite many stations showing in the NETWORKS column.
I usually spend some time switching on and off the wi-fi boxes in 'Settings' and chasing leads in the find and fix problems in the control panel but usually end up using system restore or even worse completely resetting to factory. This means a few hours of re-installing programs and usually means a loss of some videos.
What can I do to find the cause and correct it without going to that trouble?

What do you mean by many stations, picking up other WiFi in area ? Any other devices in house able to connect ?

I use a wi-fi extender to pick up all the stations nearby. Using this I mainly use a free wi-fi from the nearby public library. Alternatively can use my smart phone wi-fi. this I have to pay for!

When the computer is not co-operating about ten other wi-fi stations are showing in the NETWORKS column but the computer will not access the internet and a message comes up under the selected station saying 'Cant connect to the internet' (or something like that)

Not familiar with doing it this way, but assume you have been doing it this way and it's giving you trouble now. Figuring when using like this going to pick up anything in area with a signal. Signal bar high when this does occur to one of them, are you set to a public network ?

Yes, the library is a public network.

How would you do it then?

Do what, set to public ? Be in Network and sharing i believe, change sharing settings. Not safe as i know it, public network, why use it at home only you know.

Sorry I gave wrong info. Auckland library is a private network. What could be not safe about it?

Anyway, this is not answering my question, which is Where in my computer would I look to re-establish a failed connection?

That's odd, did not know had something like this being private. Public network is of course not safe. Could be an issue with WiFi extender. Any other devices being used on this that do work ? Right click icon in notification area and try Troubleshoot it. Added anything before this happened, updates, drivers ?

OK but accept it is not safe, but it is cheap. I can use a gig a day free!!!
Have tried troubleshooting icons but they have not helped me at all.
Without the extender the computer should read my signal from my smartphone. When problems have arisen I have disconnected extender and tried using my smartphone on its own........still failure. So problem just gotta be in computer.

Truthfully i am not familiar with using this kind of device for internet access. Only say Public Networks are not safe, you told me it is private even though seen as a library which usually is Public. WiFi extender i thought has to work off another device in house, router (modem).
I asked few questions at beginning to clarify waht you were asking. Possible someone here is more familiar with this then me.
