COuld also try one or more drivers from here if you have not already: Realtek - Software: Drivers & Utilities

I have the same NIC and am using this driver:

    Attachment 63172

which I believe I got via Windows Update.
Hm, that would be falling back even further than the one I have, but it's worth a try. The Realtek site is now offering
    Win8, Win8.1 and Server 2012 Auto Installation Program (SID:1726143)
    8.038 2015/5/27

I am wondering if setting the ethernet card properties to 10mps full duplex is somehow wrong - it's the only speed/duplex setting that allowed the card to recognize it has a cable plugged in, but is it a problem not to use Auto Detect?

This thread was the one I was using, but ultimately the way the guy fixed his problem didn't seem to apply to me or my Windows version.

I did not do this: Should I try it?

"Unplug the power plug to the Modem and the Router. Plug the power into just the Modem (unless you have a modem/router combo) When all the lights come up, plug in the power to the Router (unless combo of course)
Now Go to Start/Search and type inetcpl.cpl and press enter/Connections/LAN Settings. Make sure all the boxes are unchecked. Now go to Start/Search and type ncpa.cpl and press enter. Right click the Local Area connection/Properties scroll down to Internet Protocol (TCP-IP)/Properties. Make sure Obtain an IP Address and DNS Server Address Automatically are both checked. Now go to Start/Search and type CMD Right click the CMD icon and Run As Administrator. In the Command Prompt type ipconfig /release and press enter. the IP Address changes to 0.0.0.0 Now type ipconfig /flushdns and press enter. Now type ipconfig /renew. Now type ipconfig /all. You should have a new IP address try it again."

I have not messed with any of the settings for my NIC. If auto is default that's what mine is set to.

Have you tried booting to Safe Mode with Networking. It's a bit hokey to do in Windows 8:

    Windows key + C.
    Settings
    Power
Hold shift key and click RESTART.
Click on Advanced Options then Startup Settings.
Click Restart and you have almost the full advanced Boot Options menu like XP, Vista or Win 7..

Have not booted in Safe Mode yet. I can try that this weekend. I just updated my post above to add a suggestion from that other forum that I did not try, I wonder if I should.

I would try to go into Network and Sharing, on the left select Change Adapter Settings. Right click on the Ethernet adapter and select properties. Uncheck Ipv6, right click on Ipv4 and select properties, click on the advanced tab and enter 192.168.1.1 in the gateway. Reboot with the cable plugged. That should put the adapter back to the correct subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 You could also try giving the adapter a static address of 192.168.1.20 and subnet set to 255.255.255.0 and gateway again is 192.168.1.1

I did some of these things and it didn't work; I will try again.
I should add: I use Online Armor free firewall and Avast free antivirus, and I run a malware scan a couple of times a week with Emsisoft Antimalware....Malwarebytes also told me I was clean when I ran it yesterday. So I don't think I'm looking at an infection.
I appreciate everyone's suggestions, bring 'em on!

See how it works in Safe Mode with Networking. Maybe the firewall or AV is causing the problem.

Safe Mode with Networking: Same exact status with respect to the ethernet card.
I was going to try the suggestion from post #15 but if I choose the check box that opens up the default gateway box for entry, it requires me to specify my DNS servers, and I don't know what to put there. I tried also putting 192.168.1.1 in the primary DNS box but that didn't work. Is there something else I'm supposed to put in the DNS boxes? Thanks!!!

As an addition to this: in an attempt to answer my own question, I looked at the properties on my Actiontec router and have the values below. Should I be using these values for anything?

OK tried all of this; ipconfig for my two devices now looks like this, but still I have an unidentified network. Wireless adapter continues to work great. It says DHCP enabled: NO which looks WRONG to me... Oh, I see, because I chose an IPv4 address. Well. See anything else that looks wrong? Still says 'unidentified network' for the adapter.
