share file via ip

a friend put a file on each of my laptops (on the desktop) to share documents from one to the other but i dont know how he didit and I need to do it again. I am not much smarter than a dog and less than a lop top and tried home group but it says it cant be done but doesnt explain how to fix.
he did it in seconds but i have no clue how
I only know he used the ip address to do it
can anyone help me with this we both moved and have no further contact

You should be able to remove the file if it was stored on your hard drive.

sorry i don't want to remove anything i want to share files via ip address as he did for me before but i forgot how he did it. and the file was deleted after I was done using it. it ws a simple link to the ip somehow so I could see it on both laptops and move or share files from one to the other and back.

You would need to use an FTP program like WinSCP & Putty. Or just use a Cloud drive, which is safer. Teamviewer allows for file sharing now.

he didn't install anything to the best of my knowledge and he did it on two separate occasions ... it took him like a minute went to run ? maybe) then created a file on the desktop and it was done. any files placed in the file were seen and usable on my other laptop from the same file on its desktop. ... oh and cloud slows my laptop too much i dont know why but i am on ssslllloooowwwww mexico wifi lol

Link would be something like this:

Normally I would use the computer name, like this:

\\Webserver\hp_f\docs

but that doesn't always work. This does:

\\nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn\hp_f\docs

where nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn is the IP address of the computer the file exists on.

The above take me to the docs folder on the F: drive of the computer with the nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn IP address.

Note that in the above, hp_f is a share name I had to setup so I can access the F: drive from another computer.

great info I actually can understand but there is no way I could carry it out lol but thanks i got a brain injury lol how do I find my IP and then i would asume maybe copy and paste to a or with a link that makes it avail on both lap tops ? just guessing really

The link on your Desktop would be to another computer, not to your own computer.
You need to find the IP address of the computer you want to link to.

On the other computer:
Open a Elevated Command Prompt (Press Windows key + X, select Command Prompt (Admin).
Type ipconfig and press Enter.

You will see something like this in part of the response:


The IPV4 address is your IP address.

how do I get the connection between the two laptops to ... and linked ... to the desktop file i create?

Using a Cloud drive has no effect on your computer. It is the same as if you were browsing a website.

If you picking up an open Wifi Access Point in Mexico. Yes it will be slow. It can also be a Honeypot to collect private information from you, while using it.

If you have a router, which can manage folders, that could be it.

cloud has slowed my lap top to the point I can not use it and I am on my own wifi at home but it is extremely slow and likely what is slowing computer but I still dont know this 'secret' to sharing the file via IP. I will leave this open for anyone who might know but that is the only issue I wish to leave open... thanks Ztruker & broe23 for getting me this far.

1st you have to share the folder or folders on the target computer.

File Sharing - "Share with" & "Stop Sharing" in Windows 8

Then you right click on the Desktop an select New then Shortcut.
Enter \\nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn\share and click Next.
Give it any name you want


Double click on the shortcut on the Desktop and Windows Explorer will open to the folder defined by the share.
