Solved Homegroup - 1 pc sees, the other doesn't

Hi, I have an irritating problem with my homegroup. I set up a homegroup on my Windows 7 desktop and joined the homegroup on a Windows 8 laptop. All was working fine until recently.

The desktop doesn't seem to have a problem it can see the laptop both in network and it shows as available in homegroup.

When I open up explorer on the laptop, the laptop can see the desktop in network but not in homegroup. In explorer on the laptop the laptop itself is listed but not the desktop.

I would be very grateful for any suggestions that might correct this.

Thanks
Llewitha

Check your Share settings, and security settings tabs, on both units on the drives you are sharing

I have checked the share settings on the desk top as that was the machine which had the problem. I'm looking to share the documents library so I made sure that that was shareable (read/write) with the homegroup.

I can now see the desktop on the homegroup tab on the laptop but it says this PC is not currently available.

I find this weird because if I scroll down to network I can access the Desktop document library from the laptop along with the other folders that I had previously been able to access..

yes you need to check the security tab along with the Share tab, MS hasn't made it easy for us to network.

I don't understand this. I've come back after being out. Crept up on the laptop and thought I'd just have a look before tackling the security tab. Now I haven't actually done anything since the last post but for some reason it's all working fine. This homegroup lark is a mystery to me!

Thanks for your help Clintlgm.

I forgot to tell you to reboot after making changes to Share and Security, MS hasn't made easier I still just run a P2P work Group 4 my 4 computers. Home Group just didn't work for me its too limited and fussy. Glad you got yours going cheers:thumbsup:
