Under "Play Devices" - Blu ray player appears & disappears

    Windows 8.1
Sony DVD BDP-BX510 with Wi-fi turned on

I'm trying to use the above capable DLNA DVD player but the item appears, then disappears, then appears and so forth under the PLAY Devices area. (From Charm area - Settings > Change PC settings > Devices)
I deleted it from the Play Devices area when it appears (not easy to do) and then added it back but that didn't help.

At the TV end, the device (Blu Ray player) appears and disappears the same way. My TV has wi-fi and DLNA and works just fine but I want the Blu Ray players DLNA function to work also.

    Any ideas???

Have you gone into the Network settings for the Blu-Ray player to make sure your computer shows up in there? Also the Blu-Ray players are very limited in what they play back. Most times just pictures. If you are wanting to stream movies, you will need a Plex server, and something like a Roku or Amazon Fire.

    Thanks Broe23,
Yes....network settings are okay, sort of. How do I put this? TV shows the server available and then doesn't and then does and then doesn't.......etc. The same as the Computer. With my old Windows 8.1 computer (this is a new laptop) the DVD had no problems at all. It's weird!!

Miracast is taking the place of DLNA. Miracast is considered a more secured protocol.

May be a Firewall software issue. You could try setting up a Plex Server on the laptop, and see if it works that way. Twonkybeam is compatible with the Sony BD's.

Interesting suggestions. I'd prefer not to add anything more to my laptop.......just want to figure out what the issue is and repair. Oh BTW, I've already turned off the firewall as a test, didn't change anything. Maybe I need to call Sony tech support.

    Thx

Good luck on Sony. I called them when I had an issue. Let's just say that them and Comcast must use the same Customer Service books.

There is a forum over at avsforum.com dedicated to this stuff.

Well, I did call Sony. I've had lots worse tech support experience. They did send me some "solutions" though none were really the solution.

As I was on hold, waiting for the tech rep to research, I went under the DLNA area but instead of videos, I chose pictures. Low and behold, the DLNA function started working. I then moved onto the video section and that worked too. Don't know why that combination worked but even my Windows 8.1 computer showed the DVD player as "working" status. I guess ya just have to play around with settings and options until something clicks. Weird!

    Thanks for the help!!
