Im having an issue with connecting to the homegroup at times. Sometimes it works amazingly, sometimes it doesnt connect to my computer at all. The server - machine with all the files that Im sharing - is using windows 8. Meanwhile, all of the other computers are using windows 8.1 . The problem is that the server has an old CPU that doesnt allow updating to 8.1 ( very idiotic) So I just want to know if that is the issue. If not, what could the issue be? The internet speed is a constant 16mbps w/ 2mb upload.

That should work fine for the Win8.1 update over Win8.0, I have it on a lesser machine.

It's saying " your CPU is not supported to upgrade to windows 8.1" in the windows store. Where else can I download 8.1?

That Duo Core should have no issues running 8.1.

Personally I would just use standard Network shares, vs Homegroup, which limits what you can do.

What is network shares? we are using the network tab so that might actually be what we are using. The homegroup ocasionally works but when that doesn't work we use the network tab. Can you supply the windows 8 download link? There's way too many directing me to the store.

Peer to peer networking its what we all used that didn't need a Domain based network. Peer-to-peer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Its more difficult to set up in Window 8 / 8.1 but will work once you get it all set up. the secret in 8 and 8.1 it that you not only need to set up the shares you must also set up the security for each share once you do that and set up a work group for everyone to work in. I use the standard user group Authorized Users. And I have my User Name and password on each one of the computers in my workgroup.
Here is a less detailed description Peer-to-Peer Network | Computerworld

This link will get you to an ISO or set up a bootable 8.1 be sure to get the one that you actualy have Core or Pro or single language or now I guess we got to deal with Bing version? Create installation media for Windows 8.1 - Windows Help
