Folders on a network attached drive show wrong date

Hello ... I have a flash drive attached to my Netgear wireless router that I make backups to and transfer files to and from other computers at home. It was formatted as NTFS and set up in the router about 2 weeks ago. I just noticed yesterday that all the folders in the drive have dates of 2003 -- even new folders I created today. The files inside all seem to be fine, with correct dates.

I am positive the drive did not start out this way. It was functioning normally. Does anyone know what could have caused these weird folder dates and how to prevent this from happening in the future? Is there any way to fix this? Could the backup program I am using be causing this problem? It is Syncback and it is doing automated backups to this drive.

The computer I am using is a new Asus T300 Chi with Windows 8.1.

    Any ideas? I am stumped.

It probably isn't the drive but the Router. You may have to enter the Router setup while connected via Ethernet cable and check the date. Check the documentation for the address to use in your browser, something along the line of 192.168.1.1, the last two numbers will vary between brands and maybe between models.

Sounds like the router's time setting is not proper.

Thank you both for the input. I poked around my Netgear router and lo and behold, that is the issue!

Unfortunately for me, in doing some googling, this appears to be a common issue with the Netgear model I have (WNDR3400) and I don't know if there is a fix other than to buy a new router. But I have marked this thread solved since the problem has been pinpointed and it is not Windows 8. I have also started a thread over at the Netgear forums so hopefully someone will have an answer over there.

    Thanks again.

Just an update: I was able to fix this myself by doing a hard reset of the router to factory settings + toggling on a daylight savings time adjustment option. Resetting the router alone did not fix the date. Nor did simply toggling the DST setting which I had done many times before in trying to fix the date. But doing both seems to have been the ticket. Maybe this info might help someone else who comes across the same issue with a Netgear router.

Hi all, I need a bit of advice please. I have just bought a WD Elements Portable USB HDD purely to attach it to my router and use as a network drive. It all works perfectly. I have been wondering though, is it OK to leave it permanently attached?

Just upgraded yesterday from Win7-Win8. Upgrade went mostly smooth, except I cannot connect to my network hard drive. I have confirmed that everything is setup to use WORKGROUP, and all of the other 3 win7 machines (and this machine prior to upgrade) recognize the drive. Ideas?
