I have my desktop and the wife has a laptop, which we are using along with a Netgear router with protected password. My question is, should this setting be turned to on on both computers?

That setting is for DLNA, so you can do what is Cast sharing to Smart TV's, Amazon Fire TV, Roku, etc.. If you do not want to stream to the tv or tablets, just leave it off. For some people they find that stream casting can be really poor quality if they do not have a proper network setup.

Some like the Sony's and Samsung have their own version, so that you can connect to their Smart TV's. Otherwise it is the standard Folder/Printer sharing only notation in Advanced. Personally I like the other wording that the OP has. Makes it pretty much dummy proof, when walking someone through those settings.

Is it a risk is what i might of felt in past, Network sharing set to on ? My Sony TV has Wifi hooks to router and basically for functions as you mention, same for Samsung Blu-ray Player and my Receiver uses ethernet connection as use Pandora or internet radio features i mostly use and so i can also get any updates on them all easier.
