    xp, w7, w8

Just setup a w8 machine and with all the updates going on, left the password off. Then spent an hour debugging file sharing. Worked for w8 to read a w7 share, didn't work for w7 to read w8 share. Keep lowering security, tweaking norton firewall but got no place. The read this thread and bingo. Needed to put a password on w8 machine so user accounts were identical. These lines from an earlier post on this thread turned on the lights for me.

If you have the same user account name as the remote machine, make sure passwords are the same too.

If there is no password set for the remote machine, set one and save.

Got some of the same problem with win 8 and 7 on the same home network.

The win 7 machines have same username and password, and can see each other and share the folders set up.

The win 8 machine use other username\ms sccount and i have set u shared folder than i can access from other win 7 machines. The problem is accessing win 7 shared folders. I can see the machines on the network but not connect to them. That is sometimes i get the popup to enter user and password, did that and checked "remember", and it worked.

Next time the same machine is unavailable, i can retry 10 times then get the popup again to enter username+password.

Must say i hate setting up a new os to the point where i can make an image and just use that in the future.
