    Ethernet connection issues

I've been using Ethernet the past several days on my computer since my internet connection is very slow. Beyond this, my Wi-Fi is still connected and working. The other day, my Ethernet connection stopped working even though the network was still working fine (via Wi-Fi). Now my Ethernet port on my laptop constantly shows one dim orange light and one dim white light. When I plug in a cable there is no change. Is this a software issue? I can't even find anything on my computer that indicates the Ethernet connection is recognized.

Is there a driver for Ethernet? I always thought this was built into Windows.
Second, why would my computer be recognizing Ethernet one moment, and the next moment act like I don't even have an Ethernet port?
Could this be an issue of the network card going out? If so, why are the lights on the port there?

Sounds like a connector issue, but could be the board... try changing wire, remove the NIC in the device manager and reboot the machine to let Windows re-install the driver for the Network card or get the one from your OEM model page on the net...

The status led's show network connection and network traffic..

and yes the network card does use drivers.. ID your card and get new drivers from OEM..

Usually a dropped Ethernet connections is a failing network adapter or router issue..

I would try resetting the router first..

I've rebooted the modem -- that was the first thing I tried. The lights remain on the port whether I restart my computer, reboot the modem, or even uninstall the driver. I haven't yet restarted to have Microsoft reinstall the driver, and I don't have another Ethernet cable to test.

Usually the network card status lights are off until the cable is plugged in..

Yes, I know. It's very odd. These two lights have stayed on, dimly, no matter what I do to the computer. Perhaps they're supposed to be an error message or something regarding the port itself?

I would think the Port / network card is the issue then... and not a driver issue

Is there any way to troubleshoot that? It just happened suddenly, like an unexpected failure.

I have a laptop. I'm not even sure if this is onboard, or something that I could replace.
