Windows detected another homegroup????

I bought a new router because my Linksys died. Got a Asus RT-N66U.
I am running win 8.1 on my desktop and my laptop. Internet works fine on both pc's.

I am concerned because of 2 things mainly:

#1 Network is listed as "Public" in Network and Sharing Center on desktop PC? Shouldn't it be private????

#2 I guess I still have the homegroup I had with win 8. But I only want 1 and I want the lapop and desktop on it.

Please help this old dummy.
Thanks

reason 1 - windows already had a private network - so the new router shows up as a public location..

Because there is a setting somewhere (or was before) that tell windows to make all other networks public.. (I am not sure where it is in windows 8)

Reason 2 - just go to the control panel for PC / homegroup you want to remove - select homegroup - remove or leave homegroup
