Sharing files from desktop to laptop.

Help. My desktop is running Windows XP Pro and my Laptop is running Windows 8.1. I've created a share folder that is recognized by both computers and transferring files from the XP system to the 8.1 Laptop is iffy at best. For EXAMPLE: I create an .mp4 file and a .wav file on the XP computer and both go into the share folder. I open the same share folder on the 8.1 Laptop and there are the files. The .mp4 file moves or copies just fine onto the Laptops desktop but try as I may, the .wav file will neither copy or move onto the 8.1 Laptop giving the dreaded "You need permission...." message. Now tell me, WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON HERE!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Do I need permission from GOD or my mother or from the wacko's at Microsoft for permission to move these files or what?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

What I've been doing now is simply copying non-movable files onto a large flash drive and then transferring them over to the Laptop.

The Microsoft Group needs a serious reboot in my opinion. Never a day goes by without something getting in the way of my computer using sanity, and I've been with MS from the very beginning when DOS was trouble free...

    Welcome to the forum!

I think sharing between an XP and 8.1 machine is going to be problematic at best. Will do some quick searches to see if anybody has gotten it working well.

There is an unofficial sp4 patch that may make it work better.

Microsoft support for XP was ended in April 2014.

EDIT: Found this Setting up file sharing between computers with Windows OS

You could try setting up DropBox on both systems so that you can have folders that are synced on both. That way you could just put the .wav or .mp4 file in a DropBox folder on the Win XP machine and it would automatically be synced to the Win 8.1 machine.

Since the Win 8.1 machine can see the .wav file in the shared folder, can you play that file without moving or copying it?

I've also been using MS software since the DOS days and DOS certainly was NOT trouble free, your memory must be failing.

I used to spend hours tweaking config.sys and autoexec.bat files to be able to get a configuration that would work for all installed software. Each DOS program needed it's own mouse driver, video driver, printer driver, etc... When I got my first color printer, very few of my DOS apps could print in color. DOS was a PITA. I'm sure there are many more examples I could come up with if I put in the effort.

Wow -- blast from the past! And, I have to say -- me too! Actually, I remember back then there was MS DOS, PC DOS, and something know as Dr. DOS (although I could be wrong on this last one -- that was a long time ago).

Share your pain... I regularly copy files between a Win8.1 desktop and a Win7 desktop -- have done all the necessary stuff to enable sharing -- and in more than half the time, the copy doesn't work. Sometimes the Win8.1 machine needs to be rebooted -- and then, it suddenly works; sometimes it's the Win7 machine. I even changed the Win7 machine to use a fixed IP address, hoping that would make it more predictable, but it didn't help.

Wish I had a guaranteed solution, but in my case, rebooting seems to "fix" the problem -- at least, temporarily.

I use the PUBLIC share folders and never had a problem coping 11gb files

setup network sharing - all networks - public folder sharing - password sharing off - on the win 8.1 machine

go into network on the win 7 select that win 8 pc and you see the public folder

I have one pc setup as a public share (A) - everything can be read and written there by a,b,c..

that makes it so b, c don't share

Yeah, been there, done that too. Can still make Win 3.1 work with DosBox, kinda cool to do for the fun of it.
