Browsers connection constantly timing out

Hi all,

In the last week my laptop has spat the dummy and most programs will not connect to the internet.
It's a ~3 year old HP that came with W7 that I upgraded to W8 about 6 weeks ago. Internet was working fine until last week.

Chrome and Firefox will not connect - all connections time out (haven't tried IE because it's nowhere to be found???)
Other things like AV, Steam, etc won't connect either.
Strangely though, ping Google works no problems.

It's not a router/network issue as all the other devices on the network are fine. The laptop still doesn't work when I tried connecting via the ethernet cable.

I've tried all the suggestions on How to fix connection timeout error on Google Chrome? | Laptapos.com (except for reinstall) with no luck.

I think I did a virus scan which came up negative.

Anyone have any suggestions of what else I could try? Is it a NIC issue? Or should I be thinking about reinstalling /refreshing/resetting W8?

Thanks in advance

Since Command Prompt, ping google.com works the NIC and Router and/or Modem are working, means you have an Internet connection but just can't browse sites.

One of the first things I check in such a situation is in Control Panel, Internet Options, Connections tab and the LAN settings button. In my area only the first item about Automatically detect..... gets checked, nothing below that. Sometimes it helps to go to the Security tab and set all as Default.

I checked those things, but no luck. I also booted into Ubuntu which worked fine, so as you say it's definitely not the NIC.

I've also tried system restore back to a time it was working (prior to a bunch of windows updates).
I rolled back the driver to a previous version, but no go.

Any other suggestions?
