Connected to internet, but no browsers work (Windows 8.1)

Around a week ago I installed Windows 8.1, and I can't help but think this problem is related to that. My computer (a Toshiba Satellite C855) is apparently connected to the internet, but yesterday I suddenly couldn't browse any websites. I didn't change any settings before this happened. This happened with Firefox, but I also couldn't browse with Chrome. I restarted my computer and it worked fine for about a day before I ran into problems again. I thought it might've been a virus, but a full scan didn't detect anything. I even restarted it again, but after probably 15 minutes my browsers stopped working. Any idea what the issue could be? Thanks in advance for your help.

What antivirus and antimalware software are you using? Can you run them in safe mode?

If you know some computer specifics then you can run Hijackthis and see whats starting up when you log in. If you do not know much then please do not use the software, if you disable the wrong startup software you can very easely stop making windows work and you have to either do a repair, a windows reset to a previous state or a full reinstall.

I'm using Trend Micro MaximumSecurity 8.0.1133 and SUPERAntiSpyware 5.7.1026. I don't think either of those is specifically antimalware. How do I run them in safe mode? I probably don't know enough specifics to run that software.

Try disabling or removing Trend Micro Maximum Security. Since Windows 8,1 has Winodows Defender installed.

Most times if you have more then one anti virus they might make complications for each other blocking something. It's known to happen.

    To get into safe mode:

How To Boot Into Safe Mode On Windows 8 (The Easy Way)

recommend that you goto the part where it says:

    - Getting To Safe Mode From Within Windows 8

instead of the first part where you mash your keyboard and hands to infinity trying to get into safe mode.

Ok, I ran Windows Defender in safe mode and did a full scan. It found and deleted something called 'HackTool:Win32/Keygen'. I won't really know if that fixed the problem until my browsers stop working again. Do you think there could be something else that was causing my problem?

Follow the instructions from this Vista & Windows 7 Malware Removal/Cleaning Procedure - MajorGeeks Support Forums You have to do exactly what it states. That includes turning off/disabling System Restore and cleaning out Temp. Also you can use Farbar's FRST, Minitoolbox, Grant Perms from Searching for farbar to further check to make sure the system is clean.
