remote desktop connect issue via MS remote desktop app

Ive followed the instructions to a T, & cannot get a remote access connection to my computer using the "Microsoft remote desktop connection" app for iOS. Ive watched youtube videos and followed other directions only to no avail. When I signed up for internet & installed the modem/router(s), the first thing i did was alter my routers default wireless gateway from a 192.168.x.x to my own gateway for security reasons. I also changed the default web interface login credentials. So i am familiar with the web UI of routers & I have spent many hours looking up most of the options that can be configured in the web UI of the many routers I have used & I dont think it has to do with the web UI, I think its something that involves my PC settings. I have another remote desktop app that flawlessly connects to my PC & is extremely fluid in its access, but its a third party app on an inactive andriod device. I'd really like to use the "official" Microsoft remote desktop connection app on my active iOS device &, just as important, know & understand what is preventing access to my computer with this app. I also use the "mobile mouse" app as a remote mouse & keyboard for my computer & its on my active iOS device. So any help is much appreciated

You have to be able to open the ports for RDP on your router/gateway, along with if you have a Dynamic IP that may change, have to use a Dynamic DNS option like OpenDNS. You would really be better off using Teamviewer.

I use many different remote desktops, some better than others(phonemypc ABOVE all others). However I cannot get the microsoft iOS app to run and it is frustrating because ALL others work fine.. I will go into my router UI and port forward the program and see if that corrects the issue.

If your specs are up to date and you do not have a Pro edition of Windows 8 or 8.1, you cannot use Microsoft Remote Desktop to acces your Windows 8 computer, not from the MS Remote Desktop App for iOS nor from any other device, Windows or not.

The reason is simple: Regarding Windows Remote Desktop Protocol, only Windows 8 / 8.1 Pro and Enterprise (in Windows 7 Pro and better) editions can act as remote host, hosting the remote session i.e. be the computer you connect to using RDP. A basic, core edition of Windows 8 can only be used as RDP client, the computer from which you connect to another computer, the RDP host.

    Short:
    • Remote Host = Computer you connect to using RDP
    • Remote Client = Computer used to connect to another computer over RDP
    • Windows 8 & 8.1 > all editions can be used as Remote Client
    • Windows 8 & 8.1 > only Pro and Enterprise editions can be Remote Host

See comparison of Windows 8 editions: Compare Windows 8 Editions.

How is it that I am able to use other apps that do the very thing the MS app is supposed to do? I have included screenshots of my win8 version which it looks as if i dont have pro however, I did a format recently and I SWEAR that before I did the format, my win8 said "pro". I have also included a gif to showcase a remote connection to the same PC. So is there nothing that can be done with the MS remote desk app with my config?

    Long answer:

Your GIF shows a remote connection made with PhoneMyPC, not with Windows Remote Desktop Connection.

Your screenshot shows very clearly without a doubt that you have a basic edition of Windows 8, a so called Core edition. Windows Remote Desktop Connection does only work from that computer (remote client) to any Windows 7 Professional and better or Windows 8 & 8.1 Pro and Enterprise computer (remote host), but no computer or other device cannot connect to it remotely using Windows Remote Desktop Connection regardless if you are using a Windows Remote Desktop app from a Windows computer or Microsoft Remote Desktop App from a mobile device.

    Short answer:

You cannot connect to your Windows 8 using RDP.

Unless the system properties specifically state the Pro edition you will have the standard Windows 8 that does not support Remote Desktop. Third party tools provide the same kind of functionality but they do it in different ways.

You must use a third party tool such as Team Viewer.

I am almost certain my current PC, purchased from best buy, had windows 8 pro installed. I upgraded to 8.1(sorta irrelevant but still fact) & simply wasnt happy with it. So I formatted it. I followed Sony's instructions, which were different than the actual procedure that took place. Is it "possible" that thru the format, I lost access to windows 8 pro? & by "possible" I mean, any possibility at all that something transpired which left me without a Pro copy installed? If you say the answer is, "no" that couldnt have taken place, would you testify under oath that you are certain beyond a reasonable doubt that its impossible for this to have occurred? or, even if by the slimmest margin imaginable, it may be possible that this occurred? I ask it this way because I am entirely certain that I had win 8 pro initially... I am most definitely not trying to waste anyones time. Id just like to know if I need to start getting a case together to take to sony in order to get win8pro back on my pc. thanks again for your help, thanks very much

No, it can never happen. Check the sticker (probably at the bottom of the laptop or under the battery) to see which Windows version and edition was shipped with your Sony, it should look like this:

Checking the Best Buy now, I did not find a single laptop with Windows 8 Pro or 8.1 Pro edition, all are with the basic edition.

Damn, I coulda sworn that I had pro originally. I do not have that sticker. There is remnants of a sticker that has since been removed, so i am guessing thats the sticker I am looking for. The other stickers remain, however that sticker has found a home somehwere else. If best buy is not supplying any pc's now with "Pro" then it would stand to reason that mine fell into that outline. When I had dell pc's I remember being able to get a copy of windows sent out that ended up being windows 7 pro even tho I had win7 starter. Is it possible to follow the same steps regarding windows 8 & end up with the pro version somehow? Im just curious. & as it stands now, I am simply not going to be able to use the MS RDS app with a win8 version that lacks pro features, it is as black & white as that, yes?
