Network apps stop working after installing AVAST in windows 8 CP

    Hello friends,
I have installed windows 8 consumer version.I have cleanly installed avast internet security 7(windows 8 compatible). But after installing it,avast cannot update(it says it cannot connect to server). Also network apps like Mozilla, chrome, even internet explorer cannot find any page.(as if no internet connection is there;although I have connected to internet).

i have disabled windows defender and windows firewall though. But nothing works.
Strange thing is that after uninstalling avast all apps run normally as usual.
I have tried even Norton internet security(windows 8 compatible). The problem is exactly the same as that of avast.
I WILL BE THANKFUL FOR ANY HELP.

Usually just resetting winsock and TCP/IP stack will fix this sort of problem. Lower left corner of screen, right click and choose, Command Prompt Admin

Type the following commands into an elevated command prompt one at a time then hit enter after each one then reboot.

netsh winsock reset catalog (reset winsock entries)
netsh int ip reset reset.log hit (reset TCP/IP stack)

No disrespect to Chev's advice at all because same as above here, he always has great tech solutions.

I can only give my own advice though and that is to use the removal tools for both Norton and Avast in safe mode. Reboot and set those services you mentioned to Auto and start them. Then (remember this is only advice) - forget that you ever even thought of 3rd party security and be happy.

You can then perhaps, reconsider when Windows 8 goes RTM but even then I would say not.

I did as you told me.
After resetting in cmd I restarted. The network apps like mozilla, firefox worked great. But AVAST cannot update its virus definitions like before.
Also after again restarting the PC,all problems came up again.(Mozilla, chrome cannot find any pages and AVAST cannot connect to server.)

Have you checked the Proxy settings for Avast - Settings/Updates/Proxy Settings

    Hi Calico,
    thanks for posting.
I have no clear idea about proxy settings. Can you please elaborate the fact?
    Thanks for any help.

The proxy settings I'm referring to are those defined in Control Panel/Internet Options/Connections/Settings. Avast can use the settings set here or can use it's own. In Avast/Settings/Updates/Proxy Settings the default is usually 'Auto detect' if that's not working, you can try setting 'Direct Connection'.

For the browser problems. When you install Avast, it creates a local transparent proxy that routes all HTTP (TCP over port 80) connections through Avast, this is the Avast Web-Shield. If this is not working, all connections using HTTP will fail. So, first, open Avast and check the status of the shields. If everything appears to running correctly and you still can't connect or update, it may be your installation is broken in some way. In that case.

    1. Download the avast! Uninstall Utility
    2. You had NIS installed so, download the Norton Removal Tool
    3. Run the Norton removal tool first and reboot
    4. Run the Avast removal tool and reboot (if either removal tool fails, try safe mode - shift+F8 at boot)
    5. Reinstall Avast and see what happens

    Hi Calico,
    thanks for helping.
I did as you suggested. But problem not solved.
Also I am adding some fact------WEB SHIELD worked normally.
FIREWALL SETTINGS of AVAST showed (the firewall graph actually) that it is connected normally to the internet. Also my brodband connection status showed that datas are transferring normally.
Also all the SHIELDS of AVAST worked normally.
In a nutshell,All connections were OK except the numbness of AVAST update & browsers(mozilla, chrome).

Because resetting winsock and TCP/IP worked at first "Knew that was part of the problem" but after a reboot the problem returns I'd say that AVAST or which ever A/V you are using seems to be corrupting either winsock or the TCP/IP stack, although I can't say for certain what why those A/V's would be doing that.

This is a new Op system so problems will occur with A/V's until they get all the bugs out. It may also have to do with Windows Defender already being install on your system and a possible conflict between those A/V's. I'd say that as long as those A/V's are installed you will be fighting a losing battle until they are removed from the system which it sounds like you did already. But remember that winsock or TCP/IP may still be corrupted so running the IP reset file below may fix the problems created by the A/V's

Flush the DNS cache and restore MS's Hosts file ...
Copy and paste these lines in Note pad.

    @Echo on
    pushd\windows\system32\drivers\etc
    attrib -h -s -r hosts
    echo 127.0.0.1 localhost>HOSTS
    attrib +r +h +s hosts
    popd
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew
    ipconfig /flushdns
    netsh winsock reset all
    netsh int ip reset all
    shutdown -r -t 1
    del %0

Save as flush.bat to your desktop. Right click on the flush.bat file to run it as Administrator.

    Your computer will reboot itself.

Or you could just run the batch file.

Just to be clear, you ran both removal tools, rebooted, reinstalled Avast Internet Security and you still have the same problem?

Whilst I agree with chev65 about the beta status of Windows 8 and third-party security applications, I just installed Avast Internet Security and it does work, so there would appear to be a problem with your installation/configuration. There's a couple more things you can do.

    1. In Avast, open firewall settings, disable the firewall temporally, try and update/connect.
    2. In Avast, go to Maintenance/Support/Generate Support Package Now. Select Basic Information and log files
    3. Generate the report and attach it here.
