wifi disabled upon restart or shutdown

Every time I restart or shutdown my laptop, running Win 8.1 pro, the wifi is disabled (missing from Device Manager) and the light on the keyboard that indicates wifi on/off turns orange = off. When I boot from a shutdown I am able to press the button to turn it on light shows white. However, when I press the button after a restart, the wifi will not turn on no matter what I do. In order to get it working again, I have to shutdown, boot up and again press the wifi button.

I can't for the life of me figure out why restarting completely disables the wifi so that it is not even recognized in Device Manager but shutting down and booting up, I can get it to turn on. I have the latest driver installed, and have had this issue since upgrading the laptop from Windows 7 to Windows 8. I also tried replacing the wifi card with the same model wifi adapter, and that did not solve the issue either. Any thoughts? Thanks

Sometimes there is an ACPI driver, Function Key driver or other power related driver on the manufacturers site. Have you checked to see if the is a newer one for 8.1?

They had a wireless button driver that I installed. Unfortunately that did not solve the problem. The wireless card is turning off after every restart or shutdown. Shouldn't the default behavior be that upon a power up that wireless card should be on automatically? There are no BIOS options either for the wifi card.

And, it has been a problem since I upgraded from Win 7 to Win 8 and now 8.1. All done with clean installs.

Make sure all the power settings for the wireless adapter in Device Manager and Advanced Power option are set to not allow sleep and no power saving.

They are set to not allow sleep or power. That doesn't seem to be the problem. What perplexes me is that the wifi adapter disappears from the Device Manager after restart. For some reason, the motherboard doesn't even recognize that it's there. But after I shutdown and start up again, the device manager can recognize the wifi adapter, after I hit the wifi button on the keyboard. I've never heard of such a thing.

About all I have left is to try earlier/different versions of the driver. I have had to experiment with different ones in the past.

You have probably tried this: Intermittent Wireless Connection with Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230 and Advanced-N 6235 Bluetooth Combo Wireless Modules (Microsoft Windows 8) | HP® Support
Yup, tried that too, and no luck.

Any idea why the wifi is turning off upon restart? Could this be a motherboard problem, since I have already tried to replace the wifi card with another one?

Really hard to say, all just guessing at this point. Could also be the wifi adapter. Maybe try booting in safe mode with networking and see if it works then.
