Server reset error when retrieving email

I use POP3 accounts in Thunderbird for my emails. These are the same accounts I use on my older Windows 7 laptops, but on the new Toshiba Windows 8.1 laptop I frequently get errors that the server was reset when retrieving my emails. Never happens while browsing the web. Everything else is the same: same home wlan, same router, same accounts, same thunderbird. So it has to be something to do with 8.1 or the network adapters on the new laptop. The network adapters are Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 Wireless Network Adapter Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller (VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter installed by VirtualBox) Windows says I have the latest drivers. Any suggestions? I'm not good at network troubleshooting. Thank you.

I do not know why you are going that deep on troubleshooting. The adapters would have nothing to do with this. It helps to know if you are trying from the Desktop or Metro/Start interface. Also a Server reset can happen on the other end, not necessarily on your end.

Did not know the interface mattered. Sorry. This error happens from the Desktop (the one that looks like Windows 7). I never use the Metro interface. I don't think the problem is from the server side because the identical settings and accounts in Thunderbird installed in the 2 Windows 7 laptops I have do not give the error. So I am looking for a problem or setting in the Windows 8.1 installation or laptop. Just don't now where to look for the cause. Appreciate any advice.

You could try and reinstall Thunderbird, by downloading the latest from mozilla.com. Also it helps in troubleshooting, if it is the SMTP or POP server. Also double check server settings with the email provider, to make sure you have it set up correctly.

It's pop3.
Unfortunately I've done all that. I checked the settings. They're exactly the same. To keep things simple I didn't tell you that I also use mailwasher, a program where I can view my emails on the server before actually downloading emails to Thunderbird. This is exactly what I have done for years in Windows 7 and Windows XP. Everything is the same except Windows 8.1.
Mailwasher also gives the same server reset error in Windows 8.1.
Very annoying.

Remove Mailwasher if it is giving errors. There is no need to use it with Thunderbird. It appears that complaints about server reset errors with Mailwasher, have been going on since around 2010. Dump that garbage and just use Thunderbird. As long as you have a decent A/V software, and have Thunderbird to not download images unless you authorize, and view emails in Plain Text over html. You will have no issues.
