Hi all,
first time poster.
Having a problem with my direct ethernet connection between my
windows 8 laptop and windows XP desktop. I did have it up an running successfully
previously, but had to reinstall the OS on the laptop after getting a trojan last week.

Last time it took me ages, but i did manage to pull it off. I could successfully share files
and allow my desktop PC which doesn't have a wireless NIC, to access the internet.

Now for some reason it simply wont work, and some strange things happen.

Like before, i have changed the adapter settings on the laptop to allow the internet
connection to be shared, changed the workgroup to the same name, ran the network
setup wizard on the XP desktop, but it simply isnt receiving anything.

Previously, i am fairly sure that the laptop acted as the Default gateway and DHCP server
for the XP machine, because it never worked when i assigned static values on the desktop.

Also now, whenever i turn the internet sharing on for my laptop, the active WIFI becomes
an unidentified network with no internet access which doesnt seem to make much sense!

Any ideas would be much appreciated, and i can provide other information on how i had it
working last time and the other problems im having now.

Many thanks,
Grimmace

How are you getting Internet, if you have a Wifi connection? If this is a personal LAN with a Gateway or Router, then just get a wifi card for the Desktop, if you are unable to pull an Ethernet cable.

Bridging adapters to use a machine in place of a router, can actually slow the machine that is being used as the bridge down.
