Solved Remote Desktop into win8 from win7 does not work

Potential client running win8.0 (trying to avoid 8.1) Pavilion g6
Potential host runnin Win7 pro (fully updated) and the same desktop is the host of the wifi I'm using.

So far working:
-Remote desktop from win8 into win7 (wireless).
-Folder sharing both ways (no homegroup, but direct sharing) (wireless).
** Allthough, while uploading from Win7 into Win8 it occassionally looses connection, failing upload. However downloading same files from Win8 using same network works flawless. Also again using win7 sometimes doesn't find folders until using premade shortcuts. Maybe relevant, or not.

Problem:
While trying to use Remote Desktop from Win7 desktop into Win8 Pavilion laptop I get that "...one of these reasons" error.
3error.jpg
This while rightclicking on the win8 pc in the win7 view of the network (choosing remote desktop option), so I know that the name is spelled right, it's in the network!!!

So far tried:
Setting up win8 to receive remote desktop as given here in these forums, allthough while on
SystemProperties-->Remote-->Advanced I do NOT get the remote desktop menu view, only Remote Assistant settings with hour setup and such.

Tried to connect:
-Both firewalls down, also client Avast down.
-From the network with right mouse click.
-Manually inputting the computer name into Remote Desktop

Hope there is enough to give something fresh to try.
Ty for helps :)

PS. These PC's are not on the same WIFI, only same network. I Don't know how to get the network host into it's own wifi network. For example, I can't get my iPhone to connect wireless into iTunes because they are not connected into the same wifi, only win8 is "connected" in the wifi, win7 is "merely" sending it, at least that's how I've understood the problem why I must upload/download stuff with manual wire connection with my phone.

Is the Win 8 computer running Win 8 Pro? If it isn't running Pro then it can only act as a client not a host.
I read that too earlier but dismissed it becouse I'm not hosting. That is, if I've understood the concept here with what is client and what is host, I'm not trying to reach other machines from Win8, but trying to reach it with Win7.

You do mention that the other computer is running Win 7 Pro but don't say for the Win 8 computer.
When I mouseover and rightclick "my computer-->properties" in explorer with win8 it only says the Windows 8. This makes me assume that it is "regular" or what ever the null term is. To be accurate, not sure what version of Win8 running.

strollin is correct even in WIndows 7 it was impossible to get a PRO version to run into a Home version. You can get a Home to run to a PRO but not other way around.
What I've read I have understood that this is Windows 8 hosting problem. But from your comment I feel the need to ask does it still matter when I'm using Win8 in the receiving end what Windows7 version commands it or what Win8 is in play?

I'm very unfamiliar with network sharing and homegroup and stuff so hope you have the patience for these kind of questions.
BTW, I didn't get homegroup to work but it's been over a year since I last tried it so don't remember what it was. I think minor issue that made it (IF I recall) so that homegroup owner win8 worked everything else but win7 couldn't access anything, and homegroup owner win7 nothing worked. OR otherway around (win7 homegroup win8 can't read, win8 homegroup nothing worked), but that's my recall of why I'm using direct sharing folder by folder. Again, if it matters.

To the best of my knowledge yes you should be able to connect Windows 7 sp1 for example to Windows 8.1

The computer you are trying to connect to is referred to as the host, the computer you are connecting from is the client. Since you say you wish to connect from the Win 7 computer to the Win 8 computer, the Win 8 computer is considered the host and must be running Pro.

On the Win 8 computer, go to Control Panel->System and Security->System and look under the section labeled Windows Edition. If it's Pro it will list it as Windows 8.0 Pro.

One way to circumvent this issue is to use the free TeamViewer software which will allow either computer to act as either a host or a client.

The RDP terminology can be a bit confusing:

  • Remote Desktop Host
    • The computer you connect to over RDP, hosting the RDP session
  • Remote Desktop Client
    • The computer you use to make a Remote Desktop Connection from
  • In other words, Client is the computer you use to make the connection, Host is the computer you access from Client over RDP
In your case when you use the Win 7 Pro to connect to your Win 8, the Win 7 Pro PC is the Client and Win 8 PC the Host. All editions of Windows 7 and 8 or 8.1 can be clients (to connect remotely to another computer over RDP), but only Windows 7 Pro, Ultimate and Enterprise and Windows 8 / 8.1 Pro and Enterprise can host a remote session (to be connected over RDP).

You cannot make a remote connection to a basic Windows 8 / 8.1 or to Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic and Home Premium editions.

To the best of my knowledge yes you should be able to connect Windows 7 sp1 for example to Windows 8.1
Not true. See above.

In this case the Windows 8 computer would be the host and the Windows 7 computer the client. This is consistent with the screenshot provided. With Windows 8 only Pro and Enterprise editions can act as a host for RDP. Unless the Windows 8 system properties specifically mentions one of the above it will be the standard Windows 8 edition which does not support RDP.

Almost any computer can be an RDP client. I have used a Windows 2000 client to connect to RDP running on a Server 2012 host. Years ago I used a Windows 3.11 client to connect to Terminal Services running on Windows 2000 Server. You can even get RDP client software for Linux and the Mac. Many portable devices will also work.

@Kari,

how is my statement not true? If you have Windows 7 sp1 Ultimate for example you can connect it to Windows 8.1 PRO correct?

I didn't specify PRO etc cause I figured that information was gathered already from earlier posts.
