Unidentified network with No internet access

    Windows 8.1

Well, the same laptop with the almost the same Windows 8.1 worked pefectly with this router with the same settings 4 months ago. After some event (I wish I knew what was that, I guess some update or connection to a malfunctioning network) that did not include this specific router at all, the laptop with Windows 8.1 stopped connecting to any network (though, it sees them).

And now, the same laptop booted under Xubuntu liveUSB DOES work with this router. As do many other devices. While this laptop booted under Windows 8.1 does NOT connect to ANY router either wireless or wired.

I really appreciate your trying to help. But, please, stop accusing the router and reread the first post.

What ISP do you have? Also, did they issue you a Gateway or just a modem for connection to their network. At this point, this whole thread is a moot subject, since you are not answering questions that are needed.

Unless you want to answer specific questions, and stay on topic, not go off on some other subject. I am done at this point, trying to help you.

Maybe I just missed it...but have you tried a factory reset on the modem/router and started from step 1?

Are you sure you have the most up to date driver for your wireless driver? I do know several adapters out there that don't have compatible 8.1 drivers yet. Which will be a nightmare when Windows 9 finally comes out.

Actually, I wrote it a day ago:

No, I have not, since it works ok.

I am not sure. The page on the official site (Notebooks & Ultrabooks - U38DT - ASUS) shows Qualcomm Atheros Wireless Lan Driver and Application while Device Manager shows Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter. I tried uninstalling the network adapter and installing this thing and it doesn's seem to work.
But I am sure that everything worked with this default MS driver 4 months ago.

P.S. I am truly sorry for being so refusing but I cannot wrap my head around the idea that in case of:
    • this network problem taking place when my laptop under Windows 8.1 tries to connect ANY router,
    • my home router perfectly working with all other devices INCLUDING my laptop booted under Xubuntu,
    • this network problem having started with this instance of Windows 8.1 when my home router was thousands of kilometers away,
    • General failure when pinging localhost

the main suspect is my home router.

If other devices work fine on the router/modem but your pc doesn't it relates either

    a) to a router settings or
    b) to a pc problem

I would suggest the next thing is to try that factory reset as suggested before. After that if it isn't successful in fixing any solution you should try the position of troubleshooting the network itself. Make sure you are using a dynamic IP if it's resendential for the most part. If it's a commercial line you will want to use static IP.

Have you done any telnet's to test the connection? Go to an elevated command prompt and telnet like yahoo or something and see what happens.

Some local city ISP; a gateway if I understand you correctly.

Ok, did reset, it did not help a bit. Telnet immediately shows connection failure.
Please, let's just assume that amongst those networks I tried to connect to there are the ones that are guaranteed to work perfectly. And since the laptop with this instance of Windows 8.1 was able to connect to all of them previously but now it cannot connect to any network at all, the problem is the laptop. And since it can connect to those networks when running Xubuntu, the problem is in this instance of Windows 8.1 which has been modified somehow before losing ability to connect.

If you are using that Router behind a Gateway, yes you can have issues. Really need to know what ISP you are using, and what Gateway they are giving out to their customers.

Router behind router can cause issues if not set up properly.

Are you using a suite that has it's own firewall? Does your router have firewall settings? It's possible the network is being hid by one of them or being blocked.

Do you have a certain amount of limited connections to the router? (example: some routers you can say how many devices can connect to it) How about MAC filtering? Do you have it set so only certain MAC addresses can connect?
